Update 10/02/11:
A diagnosis of heartworm disease can be sobering when one understands that this infection is potentially deadly for dogs. Though treatment is successful in the majority of cases that MAESSR undertakes, it is often lengthy and can carry its own life-threatening risks at any stage. A complication stemming from initial treatment claimed the life of Chessie this week, a sad reminder of the toll this easily preventable disease can take.
God speed, sweet girl………many were so hoping for your recovery.
Original:
Chessie came to MAESSR from a rural Virginia shelter where she had been found as a stray. The wonderful volunteers at the shelter knew a diamond in the rough and went the extra mile to show how wonderful Chessie really is. They had her spayed, had a dental treatment given to her, and shaved her down to get rid of the mats in her coat.
Once she has warmed up to you, Chessie is a very sweet girl. With someone new, she is a bit anxious in the beginning. If her collar is grabbed, Chessie does not like this and will nip at your hand. She does not bite; she just grabs your hand and put a little pressure on it to tell you to leave her collar alone. When she knows you, then you can touch her collar and rub her ears with no problem. Her foster mom is working on this behavior to help Chessie be more accepting of having her collar touched.
Heartworm positive, Chessie will begin treatment soon. She was also started on an inexpensive medication for anxiety that seems to be helping her adjust to her new life in foster care.
Please keep an eye on Chessie as she progresses through her heartworm treatment. The MAESSR family is pulling for your complete recovery, Chessie!
