Update 10/13/03: Chessie is now with a family who absolutely adores him.
Original:
Chessie has lived with his elderly owner in the same house since he was a puppy. The owner had a stroke and is now in a nursing home and will not be coming home. Chessie is currently in the boarding kennel where he has been several times before for grooming and boarding. He is well-known there and is loved by the staff.
Chessie is housetrained, however, he is accustomed to the convenience of a doggy door and a fenced yard because his owner could not take him for walks. When family visited, he got several walks each day and was thrilled for the outings and was very well-behaved. He was always good with the neighbor’s kids, too, but has never lived with any kids. He is great around people and is used to people coming to help his owner. It was clear to people that he was also concerned for his owner in a gentle way.
For four days, a friend took him in to see how things would work out, but Chessie and the resident dog could not agree on their space. Otherwise, he has been fine with other dogs he meets on a walk. Chessie was fine, if slightly afraid, of the resident cat. He has had no other exposure to cats.
Since he has spent his whole life doting on his owner, we would suggest that he would do best as an only dog in a home without young children.
Chessie loves to ride in the car and is well-behaved on and off the leash. He is very intelligent and obedient. He does not jump up on people or countersurf but will beg for food. His owner would share her food with him. He will worry during thunderstorms but is not destructive. The kennel staffer said that he was a great dog and was a pleasure to have and to groom.
Do you need a new best friend? Chessie is waiting.
