Original: Eleven-year-old Chess lived with his owner since he was a puppy, but when his owner decided to move to a religious community, she had to give him up. MAESSR was contacted to find Chess another loving home.
Although he has many lumps and skin tags, Chess is a healthy senior Springer. He does take daily medication for arthritis in his hind legs which proves to be very effective. He also takes a glucosamine and vitamin daily without any problem.
Moving away from home and living in a foster home was a big change for Chess. Initially, he was quite stressed without his owner; he couldn’t seem to get comfortable, barking and panting frequently. Now that he has been in foster care for a while, he is doing much better. He’s much calmer and not as clingy. Also, he and the resident dogs are playing now. Springers of all ages are very adaptable dogs!
Crate trained and housetrained, Chess is generally a good boy. He often goes into his opened crate for a rest and is content there. Even when there is nothing on the counter, Chess like to put his paws up for a look to make sure he hasn’t missed anything! When his foster mom goes to work, he is crated, but not when she just runs errands. He would probably do fine without being crated at all. In the car, Chess rides well with no issues. He is an awesome dog!
Chess does pull on the leash initially when on a walk and it takes some time for him to slow down and relax. He is used to walking on a long leash, but since his foster mom now has three dogs in tow and does not want them walking in front of her, Chess has been struggling with this new arrangement. His foster mom is continuing to work with him on this new walking style. Chess has shown some mounting behavior with the resident dogs as they have been working out pack dominance order, but this has dissipated.
Since Chess likes attention from his people, he would love a forever family where he could be the star! This polite senior has lots of life in him, he minds well, and he has a very sweet nature. Who could resist cuddling with this handsome boy with his soulful Springer eyes?
