Little Chauncy is just that – she’s a beautiful, if pint-size, fieldie. She has lots of subtle freckles flecking her coat and is nicely proportioned with silky feathering in all the right places. During her recent spaying, the vet shaved her tummy but her pretty bottom-line will grow out quickly. At 30 pounds Chauncy is at a good weight. She’s eating well, loves treats, and seems an easy keeper. Keeping her fit will likely mean a generous amount of exercise daily and using some veggies as treats!
Upon arrival Chauncy eagerly explored her foster home and is clearly comfortable with indoor life. Stairs, vacuums, TVs, hardwood floors, etc., are all things she’s apparently experienced in earlier life. She’s quite comfy on a sofa and expected to sleep in her family’s bed the first night she arrived. Poor baby – she is learning off but does enjoy couch time when invited up. She also has quickly accepted sleeping on a doggie bed beside her humans’ bed. Chauncy doesn’t chew, countersurf, or trash pick. She dines in her crate and spends time there when her family is out of the house. She has also traveled for up to 2 hours in her crate with nary a peep!
With many changes for her in the last few weeks, it’s understandable that Chauncy’s had a few accidents in her foster home but, as she adjusts to a new routine, she’s relaxing and becoming increasingly reliable. She keeps a clean crate during an 8-hour work day and is good for an 8 hour night! Good girl!!
In addition to off, Chauncy sits politely for treats, is learning wait before coming out of her crate, and will down with a hand signal. The two areas she needs further training in are leash walking and grooming. Though clean upon arrival, Chauncy needed some tidying up – ears cleaned, nails trimmed, and feathers evened out. Though generally quick tasks with a fieldie, Chauncy went completely rigid the first time she stepped onto the home grooming table. She has benefited since from short, daily grooming sessions to cultivate her ease. At one foot per day, all 4 are done now and show off her compact feet very nicely! She also pulls when on a leash and will begin daily walking with the aid of a harness.
Chauncy is living well with an easy-going, middle-aged male ESS. She declines his play bows but will lie down beside him and sits beside him for bedtime snacks. She met a cavalier spaniel since arriving too and showed very good doggie manners when greeting him. For that matter, she showed good doggie manners when checking out the cement spaniel in the garden – too funny!!
Chauncy is confident with human strangers and will literally throw herself at them for attention. She is completely cool with being nose to nose with them if she gets the chance and never tires of being petted. She came into MAESSR’s care from a shelter in northern West Virginia. She had been surrendered to the shelter by someone who simply had too many dogs. She’s a cheerful gal whose greatest fulfillment will be a family of her own that has lots of time to love on her. Though she enjoys being outdoors, she’s less birdie than many field-bred springers and would likely choose cuddling on the couch beside her humans to romping through a meadow after pheasants! She’s every bit a sweetheart and will soon become someone’s lovely little companion.
