Update 11/19/07: Chauncey has returned to MAESSR due to his high energy level. His adopting family did not have a fenced yard, so Chauncey was unable to get enough exercise to be a tired boy at the end of the day. His family tried very hard and loved him but felt he would be happier in a family with a fenced yard and hopefully another canine companion to play with.
At a year old, Chauncey is still in late puppy or early teenage mode. He has a good start on manners that every Springer wants to know. He is learning not to chew forbidden things or to mouth people and easily switches to chew toys when offered a choice. He is learning not to counter surf and leaves open trash cans alone—good boy!! He is housetrained and will “come” in the house, especially if you’re seated when calling him. Chauncey will “sit” especially if a hand signal is used, and will “sit” with a wiggle when his leash comes out for a walk. His excitement just can’t be contained!
Chauncey’s traveling skills are improving. In the past he had a tendency toward being queasy in the car but that is lessening with more experience. His family doesn’t feed close to trip time and leaves the windows cracked for lots of fresh air once on the road. Chauncey sleeps most of the time now and seems to have put any anxiety behind him.
When meeting friends or strangers Chauncey gets very excited. He wants to jump on everyone. His adopting family saw improvement while they were working with him but he is still somewhat unpredictable and needs further training. Chauncey likes to sleep up on things, as many Springers do, and though not allowed on the sofa or bed, he would sleep 9 hours straight through the night in his own comfy chair in the bedroom. Yep, he snores occasionally! He has learned to hang his head over the edge of the bed for his morning “pet my nose” time rather than jumping onto the bed– very sweet!
Chauncey loves to play with other dogs and seems to be very well socialized. He also loved to tease the old cat in his adopting home but never tried to bite it. Toys are important to this youngster with stuffed ones, rawhide bones, and rope knots being his favorites. He is not really into balls yet. He loves to bury things, even toys at times.
Sweet-tempered describes Chauncey as often as high energy. He has never growled or been mean around people or other dogs. He is at the perfect stage for an obedience class with a partner who will take the end of his leash and lead him right on into adulthood. Having a fenced yard, or a dog park close by, or another playful dog to share a home with or all of the above would be great too. A tired dog is a good dog and often one who steps right to the head of the class!
Original: Chauncey is a wonderful, energetic, young fieldy Springer puppy with a beautiful full tail. He adores being with people and will jump on you in his excitement to try to get closer to you. Chauncey gives great kisses and is always ready for an adventure.
Chauncey came to MAESSR after being found as a stray by a shelter in Virginia. He has done wonderfully with the multiple dogs in his foster home. He just loves to wrestle and play chase with them. Chauncey has met the six-year-old grandson of his foster parents and he was a bit too energetic and jumpy for them to play well together. Chauncey’s foster mom would recommend that he not be placed with children under twelve, just because he is a little too excitable. Chauncey is crate trained and house broken. He will pull on the leash, so a harness is recommended for walking him.
Can you keep up with this cutie?
