Charlie was turned in to a shelter in New Jersey by his owner. He had been at the shelter for some time and was in sad shape. His hair was all matted behind his ears and the first thing he had was a day of beauty with a trim and comb and a badly needed bath. He is 12 months old, weighs 44 lbs and is in excellent health. He is heartworm negative and is scheduled to be neutered in a few weeks and will be brought up to date on all his shots which are due in august.
Charlie is a really sweet fellow who has been badly neglected in his short life. He has obviously spent the largest percentage of his time in a crate and behaves very well while confined. But once he is released, he never stops moving and has a hard time settling down for some love and attention. He loves to have something, preferably a tennis ball, in his mouth at all times. He will chase after a ball for hours on end if given the opportunity. The vet has prescribed some natural homeopathic calming drops to help in his adjustment to life outside of the crate and feels that he will settle down even more once he has been neutered. He has the bad habit of running in circles and chasing and biting his tail. The foster family and the Vet think this is a release for him when he gets overwhelmed by new experiences. As he adjusts to his new routine and new freedoms, the Vet feels he will outgrow this behavior. The other big issue the foster family is working on is his house training. He does not give any indication of needing to go outside at all and has had several accidents in the house. He doesn’t have any problem holding himself all night in the crate so there is definitely no physical problem. He simply had had not previous training of any kind and the foster family has to let him out often to avoid accidents. He gets along well with his two foster brothers.
