Updated 11/7/05: Charlie is a happy, loving ole guy who has returned to MAESSR’s care due to his adoptive dad becoming very ill and no longer being able to care for him. He has returned with a few minor medical issues but overall is doing great. He is deaf but responds well to hand signals and following the pack!
Several trips to the vet have resulted in two ear cleanings, medication for a yeast infection in his ears, a dental cleaning so Charlie can show that pearly white smile of his, and medication for a skin issue which apparently began with a flea allergy. Once all of these minor problems are out of the way, he will be a healthy guy again. With a change in diet, his coat is beginning to really shine, and it’s helping Charlie to trim his waistline a bit. His lastvet check revealed that he had lost two pounds in less than a week! He must be feeling better too because he has shown interest in playing with the younger springers in the house.
The vet says that Charlie’s heart sounds great, and it should with all of the love he has in it! Charlie is truly a Velcro dog and will cry when not with his people. He has learned how to navigate stairs and follows his foster family everywhere. He has no problem going a full 8-hour night without any accidents but does need the chance to scoot out as soon as he wakes up in the morning. When he is up and more active during the day, he needs to be let out a little more often. He sleeps with all of the resident springer clan on beds in his foster mom and dad’s bedroom and has shown no interest in getting up on the furniture. He does like a nice SOFT bed to sleep on the floor though! He is getting along fine with the resident springer crowd, a visiting springer, and a visiting Labrador. He has not been exposed to cats in his foster home as of this time, and his meeting with a little toddler in a pet store made him VERY happy!
As reported the last time he was in foster care, Charlie does not like his collar grabbed quickly. However, it appears the more comfortable he is getting with his foster family, the more tolerant he is of that, especially if it is done in a slow, loving manner.
Overall, Charlie is a great guy. Are you ready to share Charlie’s golden years with him?
Original: Charlie is a very nice dog who has attached himself to his foster mom. He wants to be with her in the same room as much as possible. He is deaf and watches the dominant dog in the house, we think it is his way of coping with being deaf, he knows what is going on by watching the other dogs. As a matter of fact for a while, his foster home doubted whether or not he was deaf. Call another dog and he’ll follow along.
He is a small 43 pound dog, with a very even tempered and is good with small children, nothing seems to faze him. The only time he gets grumpy if we grab him at the collar fast, but if you go slow over his head like a pet, he is fine.
Charlie is a lapdog and will go to anybody who is willing to pet him, he prefers to lay on you. The vet said that the whole time he was there to get neutered and teeth cleaned all he did is watch everything, not a peep out off him even with cat and dogs in motion all over the place. Being a little older has not slowed him down. He is in very good health for his age and loves to go on walks in the yard. He still pulls on the leash a bit put we are working with him to improve his leash manners.
Charlie likes to beg, but will not take food himself he relies on his sad puppy eyes to make you weak. He can be crated but really doesn’t like it and he will bark. He has had some urine accidents in the house. He stays dry overnight but during the day he needs to be let out often. Some of that may have been a marking issue.
Charlie has a very cute howl, very vocal when he knows he will get fed. It is very soft more talking than barking. He will make a great addition to any household with another friendly dog.
