Field Springer Charlie and his older housemate Tobie found themselves in a Pennsylvania shelter after their owner passed away and his wife didn’t want them. Apparently, they were the husband’s dogs and wife had been keeping them outside all the time since his death. MAESSR became aware of their predicament and soon they were safe in MAESSR foster homes.
Charlie does fine with the house foster dogs as they are submissive. Although he likes the role of alpha male, the two resident dogs are larger than Charlie and he has had to be # 3 in the pecking order. When he tries to challenge his status in the pack, Charlie ends being the loser.
Although Charlie has not been exposed to little children, his foster mom recommends that he be the only dog in a family without children. Charlie walks nicely on a leash but needs watching while walking near other dogs. At times he barks and lunges at a dog across the street.
Housetrained, Charlie will whine to signal his need to go out. He will mess in the house if his people do not get him out in time. He is not crated at the house and although he has full roam of the house all day, he is content to sleep. At night, he sleeps on his foster mom’s bed and on the doggie bed in the master bedroom. With good house manners, Charlie does not counter-surf, get on furniture, or chew inappropriately. Good boy, Charlie!
Charlie knows “sit” and responds to “come” when called. He loves running off lead at his foster family’s farm and stays near his people, coming when called. Charlie is fed in the kitchen with the other dogs and each dog has a separate area to eat. Charlie is good at the vet and is good with grooming. He loves dog treats and rawhide bones. This beautifully marked Springer with great confirmation loves his dog treats and rawhides. If his foster parents run out and need to make a trip to the pet store to re-stock, Charlie rides well in the car with them.
Charlie needs a forever home with experienced dog owners who can teach him appropriate manners. A submissive dog pal in his forever home would be fine, but please no young children; dog-savvy teens would be fine though. The training efforts his forever family will invest in Charlie will be repaid many times over in a wonderful companion.
