Update 03/28/2013: “To further this rascal’s training, obedience classes have just started for both Charlie and his foster family.”
Charlie is grateful to have put his UTI and ear infections behind him. With his treatments complete, however, there are no more pills to take, so he’s missing his liverwurst………poor boy. He has gained a couple of pounds and his coat is growing out beautifully. Everyone comments on how good looking he is!
Since coming into foster care, Charlie has learned to sit and wait politely for his dinner, but he has also started to counter-surf. To further this rascal’s training, obedience classes have just started for both Charlie and his foster family. They’ll be working together on basics that every good springer should know. In a few months when Charlie has graduated, he will be a great pet for his adopting family. Check back to keep up with this one’s progress………
Original: “Sweet and friendly with people, this mellow boy loves to be with his foster parents and is very much the Velcro Springer.”
When their Virginia owner developed major health problems and could no longer care for her ESS Charlie and his kennel mate Fancy, an English Cocker Spaniel, the family relinquished these former show dogs to MAESSR.
This duo is being fostered together and they are having a great time! Their play often gets vigorous with some serious “grumbling” and some barking. Even though Fancy instigates most of their mock battles, Charlie is big enough that he can bully her in the end. She does have a trick, though. When she has had enough, she flops submissively on her back. As soon as Charlie lowers his guard, she comes back with a quick ankle nip or two. Sweet Charlie falls for this trick every time! Besides playing with Fancy, Charlie has enjoyed meeting new dogs at the dog park with the usual exchange of sniffs and no drama. Good boy, Charlie! He’s not very interested in playing with toys, though.
Housetrained and displaying nice manners inside, Charlie is given free access to the house during the day and is crated at night. He signals his need to take a potty break by wiggling and fidgeting by the door. He does not get on the furniture and does not counter-surf or get in the trash.
Sweet and friendly with people, this mellow boy loves to be with his foster parents and is very much the Velcro Springer. Charlie thrives on attention and he likes to be touched everywhere¯ ears, paws, belly, and back! When he greets people, he tends to jump up and be mouthy; he’s not aggressive but just eager like a puppy, despite his age.
Charlie has not had much obedience training, but he responds well when asked to “come.” He has been quite good on the leash and is an excellent car rider, calmly staying in the far back of the station wagon. His forever family may want to enroll him in some obedience training so that Charlie can be more responsive to their commands.
When Charlie came to his foster home, he had a urinary tract infection which is now responding well to medication that he happily takes when it is placed inside some liverwurst! The vet has prescribed antibiotics for an ear infection, too, and Charlie is good about having these drops placed in his ears. Although he came into foster care on the thin side, Charlie has put on some weight since he is not a picky eater.
All this handsome, loving boy needs is a forever family to love him back and provide the exercise and training Charlie needs to be a great family member.
