Updated 6/23/05: Charley’s basic education is coming right along in his foster home. He is doing well on his housetraining although he does not give any signals. He goes out when the other dogs do and is praised heavily when he does makes use of the opportunity. He gets in and out of the car now without help. He remains a bit of a chewer but passes up shoes when supplied with correct things to chew on. He counter-surfs for wet cat food or butter left on the counter edge but will get down when told.
Charley loves wrestling with his younger foster brother. He is quite the wiggler when he is playing and loves to roll around on his back, practically doing somersaults. Charley still will bark, cower, and back off when meeting strangers, but his foster family has never seen him growl with seriousness at any human or animal. They feel he just has not been exposed to a whole lot of things in his short life.
This is a VERY SWEET boy who loves affection and who LOVES being with his people and his animal family. He is full of kisses and affection. Charley will be a wonderful addition to any family who will commit to continuing his obedience training
Original: Charley came into MAESSR’s care from a shelter where he had been turned in as a stray. He is a sweet young, springer boy who probably had been an outside dog in his former life since his coat was quite sun bleached. He has lovely freckling on his face and legs and was all kisses and love for the groomer!
Though taken in as a 2-year-old, the vet thinks Charley is just about a year old or a little younger. He is healthy and fit. He is a good eater who is not food aggressive. He does not counter surf or beg, either. Not being housetrained is his only shortcoming, but his foster family is working with him on this issue. Charley accepts being crated without a fuss, but his water intake has to be regulated so that he does not have any accidents in his crate. At night he sleeps on the floor in his foster parents’ bedroom.
Charley is a submissive youngster and gets along well with his two springer foster brothers, ages 2 and 10. He enjoys playing with the younger resident springer and follows him closely when they are in the yard together. The resident cats hiss at Charley and he is afraid of them but interested, and, probably would chase them out of curiosity. Although he rides well in the car, he does not jump in on his own. This is also an issue being addressed by his foster parents. He can be shy around new people and may bark at a stranger, but once he sees that they are friendly, he warms up quickly. He has met a 5 and a 10-year-old and was pleasant with these kids immediately.
Charley is learning his name quickly and responds well to “come” and “sit.” When asked, he sits politely while his leash is put on. It would be good for the family who adopts Charlie as their MAESSR springer to continue with his basic obedience training. He thought he could walk on water at the park and found his swimming technique also needs some polishing! This young, loveable springer surely can paddle his way into hearts! Give Charley the loving home he deserves! And if it includes a pool, pond, lake or creek, be prepared to share it!!
