Update 3/8/05: Charlz, known more recently as Charlie by his buddies, has come into MAESSR care a second time because his owner found he didn’t have enough time for him. Charlie is now a three year old who would like to be the alpha male in his foster home. He came from a home with two cats and another dog, all of whom he got along with well. He is very curious about everything, looking into every closet or cabinet that the foster mom opens to see what is in there. He will turn his head and stare at his foster mom when she speaks as though he is seriously contemplating everything she is saying!
Like many springers his age, Charlie has acquired good house manners. He is totally housebroken and has been given the run of his foster home. He shows no signs of food aggression, chewing or destructive behavior. He does like his creature comforts and will get on furniture without being asked, making it all the easier to cuddle up on any lap he finds there. He has never been crated and his foster family allows him to sleep in their bedroom along with the two resident springers. He WILL jump onto the bed and sleep there all night if allowed, another comfort that’s hard to resist.
This fellow has lived much of his life with adults. His foster family finds that he is skittish around children at this time, especially young girls. He will try to hide if confronted by them. He will growl if cornered by a child or a stranger until he gets comfortable with them. In his past, Charlie was a gentle and eager “meeter and greeter” when out in public. It may be best if his adopting family doesn’t have small children, but with some patient coaching and confidence building, he may enjoy new people more quickly again.
He walks on a leash well and will come back on his own when he reaches the leash limit or when called. Can you open your heart to Charlie and give him a permanent home full of love and attention? This is really what he needs to unleash the “love bug” within.
Original: Charlz is a sweetie pie full tailed Springer looking for a new home because is living in an apartment with no room to run and play and he is spending too much time alone due to his owners work schedule.
Charlz has been very loved and well cared for in his lifetime. He was rescued from a shelter at 9 weeks where he was born to a mom that was so malnourished that they couldn’t even tell she was expecting until the pups were born.
Charlz is in good health, up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm preventative. The owner had his hips checked when he was young and the x-rays at the age of one showed some possibility of hip dysphasia. Charlz has been pain-free and is not impaired in any way. If he is not allowed to become overweight and is kept reasonably well exercised, he should be fine.
Charlz is good with children that he has met at the park. He is always gentle and eager to say hi. He does not live with any children, however. He likes to play with other dogs at the dog park and lives with a cat that he adores. He is house broken but is not crate trained although he is confined to one room when no one is home. Charlz is not really a barker but may bark if he hears another dog bark. He may snatch up a shoe if it is left out for him and may beg a little but will go away if told to do so. He knows sit, shake, heel, down, stay and speak. He is good on leash but will pull until told to heel. He is good off leash. Charlz likes to take rides in the car and has a seat belt that he wears and is used to.
