Original: “She just turns into a wiggle-butt when being made beautiful or when the humans magically appear in the morning to pet her and then give her food.”
Chani and her brother were outside dogs and had been tied up for approximately five years when a young woman rescued them from their original Pennsylvania owner. Chani, taken to live in a small apartment with another dog, two cats and several humans, was overwhelmed. Her rescuer reached out to MAESSR, and this Valentine’s Day girl found herself in a new foster home.
After a few initial accidents, Chani soon picked up on the fact that the other four-legged critters in her foster home were doing their business outdoors and that’s where the praise was given—what a smart girl!! She doesn’t yet have a signal to go out, so her foster mom just makes sure she gets outside with the others. Too many years in the cold have made her hesitate at the door, but she’s fine with having her collar touched and being pointed in the right direction.
Reportedly, she was shy with men, but that didn’t happen when she met her foster dad. Her short tail just wagged a mile a minute when he spoke to her nicely. Her family was also pleasantly surprised at how quiet Chani is; they’ve heard maybe one “woof” in a week of fostering.
This love is too short to counter-surf, doesn’t jump up on folks or furniture, and doesn’t chew anything she shouldn’t. Combined with her non-barking ways, these good manners make her great foster gal. She sleeps crated at night and retires there in down times during the day, but joins the resident dogs for group pets and sitting for treats
Chani is fed away from the other dogs since she eats with more urgency than they do. She doesn’t really play with them but will fetch stuffed animals for her humans, sometimes bringing them back, sometimes detouring to her personal crate to keep them for herself. Reportedly, she resource guards high value treats, but since bones aren’t given in her foster home, this behavior has not been seen. She’s had only one minor scuffle with the resident terrier who growled at her for being too close. That was quickly broken up, and the behavior has not been repeated. While she currently has another female and two male dogs in the house, she’d probably do better without an alpha female. Her current foster sister doesn’t push buttons the way some gals would!!
This pretty little girl hasn’t yet been to the groomers, but doesn’t mind being brushed or touched all over. She just turns into a wiggle-butt when being made beautiful or when the humans magically appear in the morning to pet her and then give her food. Her previous rescuer said she does fine on leash and has good car manners–just flopping in the back seat is her style.
Chani is responding gratefully to attention; she has a good personality, winning Springer grin, and is looking for a family to keep on teaching her how fine it is to be an inside dog. She’s an easy companion and would be comfortable with or without another dog to keep her company. Will she have the luck of the Irish and a home of her own before St. Patrick’s Day??
