Chance is a beautiful, soft-haired, 3-year-old springer that was rescued from the Harford County (MD) Animal Shelter on March 29. He was relinquished by his owners for, as they described it, “disobedience”. Since arriving in foster care, he has been extremely well-behaved. He gets along well with children and other dogs. He is in excellent health, up-to-date on all shots, is heart worm negative and neutered. He weighs approx. 50 pounds and has a very healthy appetite. He does have one missing canine tooth (lower left) and his history of dental work is documented on his vet records. He also has a few small scars on his ears (of unknown origin) which are healing well.
At first glance, Chance looks somewhat unorthodox. However, his physical Springer pedigree was apparently confirmed by two separate breeders who suggested that he was “field bred”. He has a slight underbite and a shorter-than-usual snout. He has a very square, boxy conformation that makes him look somewhat like a bulldog trapped in a Springer’s body! He has the softest hair of any Springer I’ve ever known! It’s very smooth and silky and delightful to touch.
Behaviorally, Chance is very energetic. He loves to play with toys and will fetch. He also loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home. Although the usual dominance issues existed at first, once resolved, he has become very well-adjusted. He is not a submissive dog, rather he stands his ground and doesn’t back down. He has had a few marking incidents in the house, but has otherwise exhibited no housebreaking problems.
Chance is a very sweet and loving boy. He loves to be groomed and will voluntarily jump on the grooming table. During his foster care, he has not been confined to a crate and has done well when left alone in the house (although he may have been an accomplice to one counter surfing incident!). When outside on a leash, he is eager to smell every smell, but will not pull aggressively on his leash. He knows the commands for “sit”, “down”, “paw” and “come”. He also knows “NO!”
Chance will definitely be a wonderful companion and life-long friend….all he needs is a CHANCE!
Update 5/13/03:
It’s not by chance this wonderful dog found a new home!
