Cassie is enjoying her new adoptive home!
Update: 11/09/03:
Now that Cassie is fit and healthy, she has regained all her ESS energy and is bounding around very happily! She has bonded equally to both her foster parents and loves human contact, always wanting to rest a head or a paw on her foster family. She is very friendly with dogs in the dog park but spends most of the time chasing all the birds with her tongue hanging out as far as possible. No bird is too far away to catch! She also loves swimming and terrorizing all the squirrels in the neighborhood. She now gets on well with the resident male ESS and only raises her lip at him very occasionally when defending her crate. She is very playful and is always the one initiating play with him. Everyone who meets her, thinks she is wonderful. Her foster grandparents have just been to stay and would have happily adopted her themselves if they didn’t live in the UK, even though they’ve never had a dog before!
This wiggly lady will make a wonderful companion! Will you rub her belly?
Update: 10/25/03:
Cassie was spayed last week and when the doctors went in to do the surgery they found that she had an infected uterus. It’s a good thing she’s been on antibiotics for her allergies and sores when she first came into rescue or this could have been much worse. It also explains why it was taking so long for her allergies and sores to heal. Cassie is happily back in her foster home now recuperating and will be ready to go to her forever home as soon as she gets her stitches out.
Update 10/06/03:
After a few weeks in foster care we think we finally have Cassie’s allergies and skin irritations under control. Her ear infections are all cleared up and the skin issues around her mouth are getting better every day. She has been on steroids for two weeks and will slowly be weaned off. She has been taking some Benadryl, too and is on a sensitive skin diet. You can see in her picture that she has a lot of pink around her mouth and that is all the result of allergies. She actually had open sores when she came into rescue which are now healed with just residual pink but no more open sores. She has been wearing an e-collar in her foster home to prevent her from scratching and re-opening the sores. Cassie has large lip folds that need to be kept clean so that she doesn’t have these allergies and sores her whole life. Her foster home has been using antiseptic pads that contain an anti-fungal agent to help keep them healthy. Once she is off the steroids (we’re hoping next week) she will be spayed and ready to go to her forever home.
Cassie is an excellent student and has passed her course in house manners – no longer getting in the trash or jumping on the furniture. She enjoys going for walks and chasing squirrels. She hardly has any issues with the resident male dog anymore, though she is still protective of her toys (as is the male resident dog).
Cassie needs a forever family who will take care to ensure that she gets an appropriate diet and is willing and able to keep her clean and healthy. She is a sweet, loving and affectionate companion and is well worth the little extra effort and care that is necessary to keep her allergies under control. Could you be the one?
Original:
Cassie is a gorgeous black and white beauty who was relinquished to a NJ shelter. And behind that pretty face, she is quite a character! Cassie’s foster family is still discovering all her adorable features. She is obedient, knows sit, down, and off, comes when called and even goes to toilet on command. She doesn’t chew and is completely housebroken. She will counter surf and get in the trash but stops immediately with a stern “no”. She prefers females and follows her foster mom around everywhere and sleeps on the floor next to her side of the bed (she’d love to be on the bed, but she’s a good girl and gets down when told). She appears to be very used to making herself comfortable on the cushions on the sofa, but she will get down on command. She LOVES having her tummy tickled and will just roll over and wait for someone to indulge her. She travels very well in the car and is good in her crate. Running around in the garden is just not good enough for Cassie. She likes to go out on the leash at least twice a day and will bring you her leash or your shoes if she thinks her walk is overdue! She prefers to bring sandals or running shoes but will do her best to carry steel toe-capped boots if that is all that is available! Once out, she has her nose to the ground most of the time, checking that the neighborhood smells are all in order. She never actually seems to pick up any scents and hardly ever deviates from the path, she just knows that she’s a Springer and she’s supposed to sniff!
She gets on okay with the resident male Springer. She will growl at him if competing for food or attention, but avoids confrontation at other times. In fact, she is like the little sister that gets away with everything; she’ll raise her lip and bare her teeth, without making a sound, and he will growl back, and if you’re not paying close attention, he’s the one that gets in trouble, even though she started it! She responds to “no” immediately and her foster family is watching this to see if it improves as the dogs work it out between them. She greets other dogs she meets with a friendly sniff. She is not at all food aggressive with humans. And she thinks she is a guard dog!
Cassie is being treated for skin and ear infections and will be spayed once her treatments are finished. Will you give this beautiful young lady all the walks and tummy tickles she needs?
