Original: “Cass reminded his foster mom of ‘the little engine that could’ and earned the name of a scenic railroad in the area.”
Cass is one of 3 puppies that were born in a Kentucky shelter the day after their mother was dropped off by her owner. Since the springer rescue group covering Kentucky did not have a foster home available, MAESSR was approached to help and shortly the family moved to West Virginia. Over the next month everyone steadily gained weight, including the mother who was severely underweight when she whelped. At 6 weeks of age, Cass and his brothers were fully weaned, active, and eager for a bigger world each day. They’ve just moved to a 2nd MAESSR foster home to begin their vetting and socialization.
Cass got his name while in West Virginia. He was the first of the puppies to “escape” their nursery and was found that day sound asleep in the folds of a blanket awaiting laundry on the bathroom floor. He was also the first to “escape” the loafing pen outdoors. That day he found just the space he needed to explore between the foundation of the house and the chainlink wire that ran right beside it. Unfortunately, after he traveled about 10 feet, he found even he couldn’t fit in the narrowing space. Darn! What to do now? He sat for a few minutes and then figured out the only way out was the way he came in. Without so much as a whimper, he plodded backwards, all the way out………and into the arms of his foster mom who praised him for being such a smart puppy. He struck her as “the little engine that could” and earned the name of a scenic railroad in the area.
Like all puppies, Cass will require a good education. MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under 1 year old to enroll their puppy in an obedience class within 60 days of adoption.
Cass and his brothers are springer mixes and oh, so precious! All are incredibly soft to touch and have shiny coats. Their daddy is unknown but their mother is a beautiful field-bred Springer with a very steady and soft temperament. She has beautiful movement and is very athletic. She was a good mother to her pups and oversaw the human care they needed but was never, ever defensive of them. The future is bright for these little guys. If a puppy is in your plans, be sure to follow the progress of Cass, Gauley, and Seneca! Every one of them is a keeper!!!
