Although it is rare for MAESSR to have puppies for placement, Casey and his littermate Katie came into MAESSR’s care when a Springer breeder in Maryland developed serious health problems and had to rehome his dogs.
Casey came to his foster home as a 12- week old puppy along with Katie. He was welcomed by the two resident Springers and soon established them as his “aunties.” His foster home also has a bunny, but, sadly, he was told to stay back because he makes the bunny nervous.
Casey is very bright and eager to learn and please. He enjoys running outside and taking long walks with his foster mom. He loves putting his feet in the river and then running in circles through the sand at high speed. When in the house, he cuddles with his foster mom or his “aunties” on the sofa or plays with his toys with his sister. His favorite toys are a very squeaky octopus, balls, and training bones. Casey knows his name and behaves himself in the house but will play rough with his sister. For the most part, he will calm down once his name is called.
Recently Casey’s foster mom had her grandchildren visit. They are ages 4 and 6. Mr. C. had a great time with them and loved having them play with him. He has also met most of the neighborhood dogs and plays alongside them with no problem.
Casey is a good eater and does not guard his dish but is willing to share. As for water, typical puppy, he can be a bit sloppy. He does not counter surf—good boy!!
This handsome boy walks well (for a puppy) on a leash but will benefit from training. He is a quick learner, is learning sit by speech and hand signal and will lift his paw for a shake.
MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption Casey will be the star of the class!Casey still does not signal “out” for the potty but when he starts to wander, his foster mom takes him outside. His housetraining is progressing. He has only made a few mistakes and will keep his crate and play pen clean and wait until he is outside to go potty.
When his foster is not at home, Casey stays in his inside playpen (a large wire kennel) He has spent time in his inside playpen by himself and does not seem too distressed. Casey sleeps in his crate at night and is quiet after a treat. He likes to have the crate covered with a sheet so that he will not be distracted. Lately he has been playing a game of hide and seek to avoid going into the crate but will settle down once in and be quiet. At night, sometimes, Casey discovers the other dog in the reflection in the door and is quite the guard dog. He cannot understand why that puppy can’t come in when his foster mom opens the door!
Casey is a very friendly puppy, a great cuddle and soft mannered. His foster family will miss him and know that his forever family will love him just as they do.
