Original: “Although Casey lived most of her life in an outdoor kennel, her transition to home-living has been easy!”
Casey was one of four breeding dogs from New Jersey who were relinquished to MAESSR when the owner developed severe health problems. The owner knew that MAESSR would find his dogs loving forever homes.
Although Casey lived most of her life in an outdoor kennel, her transition to home-living has been easy! Initially very timid, once she became comfortable with her foster family, Casey proved to be a true love bug. She wants to be next to her foster mom at all times. She spent the first couple of nights in her crate where she felt comfortable. Once she got her confidence up, she has wanted to stay with her family, including wanting to be on the sofa beside them (“off” is not part of her vocabulary yet!), and upstairs on the floor for nighttime. When adult guests visit, it takes her a while to warm up; she keeps her distance but will approach as she gains confidence and finally wants her ears scratched.
It seems as if Casey is housetrained. She has not had an accident in the house, but does not yet have a good signal to go out. She will wait till she goes outside to relieve herself but she doesn’t, though, want to go on-leash. Her yard is fenced and she has not tried to dig or jump out. Now, she has the run of the house.
At mealtime Casey does beg a bit but she has not counter-surfed or “dived” into the trash. Her foster family has yet to find a commercially available treat that she likes; hot dog pieces have been the winner.
During her initial vet visit, Casey was still very timid, so her vet put off some of the exam until her spay surgery. However, just three days later, she went with her foster brother to the vet and allowed the doctor to examine a small mass on one of her mammary glands without issue. Good girl! She will let her foster family examine her feet and she seems to enjoy being brushed now that she is more comfortable in her new environment. When she is feeling nervous, she either backs away or drops to the ground. She has not shown any aggression when fearful.
As long as her family is outside with her, Casey loves trailing bunnies, chasing squirrels and birds with her family. As soon as her people head for the door, she wants to come along. Having a family eclipses chasing critters!
Casey already has “sit” mastered and is working on “come.” She is a quick learner! On leash, she does need some practice. She pulls on leash since everything is all so exciting with so many new smells to investigate, especially if there is a rascally rabbit in sight! She interacts well with the resident Springer who is not mobile, and she has decided the resident cat is not as scary as initially thought. Casey is fine meeting other dogs with proper introduction but will grumble if one approaches quickly off leash.
Casey is a sweet soul who will grow with exposure to more people, animals, and new situations.
