Updated 6/10/05: Carter is responding well to his treatment for Lyme disease and is much more active now that he is no longer in pain. He has been neutered and had his teeth cleaned. He is a very calm dog whose favorite pastime is lying on his foster dad’s lap, getting loving and attention. He is not a big eater and prefers people food to dog food, but he is learning that dog food is better than no food! He does not beg at the table and doesn’t seem to have any desire to counter surf. But he will watch his foster mom like a hawk when she is working with food, just in case some should fall his way.
His house manners remain impeccable and his favorite toy is an old beef bone that he loves to chew on. He has been to a local dog park with his foster family and while he was interested in greeting the other dogs, he did not seem to be interested in playing with any of them. He preferred to walk by his foster mom’s side the entire time. He loves to walk and he explored every nook and cranny of the park. He did not seem interested in the pond at all, even though it was a very hot day. His foster family has not crated him at all. He has the run of the house along with his two springer foster brothers when his family is at work. He still whines and howls occasionally, especially when left alone. He would love to have a new brother or sister to spend the day with. Are you looking for a loyal companion? For yourself, or for your resident dog, or both? Carter would love to be your friend!
Original: Carter is a large springer who desperately wants some love and attention. At 79 pounds, he is only slightly overweight because he is very large-boned. He stands 22 inches to his shoulders and has the biggest paws of any springer his foster family has ever seen! When they met him, they thought Carter was a St. Bernard because of his size and all his fur. His foster family had to clip him short to clean him and check for any health issues. He has been to the vet and is currently being treated for Lyme disease. He had no symptoms of this, but his test was positive, thus prompting treatment. He will be having his teeth cleaned when he is neutered.
This is a very laid-back, sweet-tempered guy who seems to get along with everyone, including the two resident springers. He has great house manners and will not jump up on people when they come in. He will, however, lean against them to get his share of attention and love. He does occasionally get up on furniture, although usually not, unless his foster family is otherwise occupied. Carter has not been crated by his foster family as they have not seen any need for it. He has not attempted to mark, destroy or eat anything inappropriate so far.
He has not been to the local dog park yet, but while on walks, he has ignored any dogs he came across. He doesn’t seem to react strongly to children playing or noise on the streets either, so it seems he will get along with anyone or any animal. His foster family will check this out more after he is neutered. He does not counter surf at this time and doesn’t seem to need a lot of activity, but he may still be getting used to his new surroundings.
Normally Carter will lie at someone’s feet and whine softly to tell them he needs to be given some love. His big “fault” so far seems to be his whining for attention. He will howl when left alone but he hasn’t really barked yet. His foster family thinks he hasn’t seen a need to bark, since howling and whining are getting him all the attention he needs! He would do best in a home with another dog, because he spent his first 8 years with a litter-mate and doesn’t seem to like being alone. He does fine when left for several hours along with the resident springers. He has such a pretty face and is desperately looking for someone to give him lots of love and attention.
Will you open your heart and share your hugs with Carter?
