Updated 8/10/06: “Miss Carolina” continues to live up to her “Wiggle Butt” nickname. It never stops! She had a brief encounter with kennel cough but is in top form now. She has dazzled her four-legged housemates with her enthusiasm and spunk. They have readily accepted her, even to mimicking her dinner time “shriek!” As she is several years younger than they are, their activity levels have definitely gone up.
She’s still not into toys but loves to pick up personal items like socks or shoes, just long enough to let people know she has them. She will readily return them from her soft mouth. Her favorite game to play with her foster dad is to go outside into the fenced paddock area from the back door of the house, and after spending a few moments sniffing around, she glances at him, then sprints across the grounds, up to the steps of the screened in porch, shoves the door open and stands at the glass doors waiting for him to come around from the yard, wiggling all over.
Now that Carolina’s health is restored, she can be spayed. Her next mini-milestone will be adoption day and, indeed, a very happy ending for this little stray from North Carolina!
Original: This very, very, pretty little gal is a petite 32 pounder. When first rescued, she was in need of a good grooming and some basic veterinary care. She has been treated for an ear infection and internal parasites, both of which are now nearly gone. While Carolina is being spayed, she will have an umbilical hernia repaired and undergo a good dental cleaning as well. Beyond these needs, she is in good shape and will certainly blossom with love and attention.
In her foster home, she lives with 6 Welsh Springer Spaniels, one rescued Rottweiler and one rescued all-American mix. After a week of settling in, she is getting along well with everyone and is just beginning to play with the other dogs. She enjoys running around in the backyard and recently found that catching soft Frisbees is lots and lots of fun. She has also discovered that the kiddie pool full of water is great for a splash on these hot, summer days.
In the house, Carolina has a few small habits that are being addressed. She is a major trash picker, counter surfer, and beggar. Her foster parents feel that this is as much a survival skill as a result of her possibly having never lived indoors. Like most Springers, she is bright and is learning quickly when given gentle correction. She has not had a single accident in the house, so she has been deemed housetrained. Carolina will tolerate a crate, although it is certainly not her favorite place to be. Since she is such a calm and laid-back girl, her foster parents give her free run of a huge kitchen, complete with her soft bed, and she is more than willing to hang out there while her mom and dad are at work.
Carolina is a major love bug and adores everyone that comes to visit at her foster home. She immediately rolls over and offers her belly for a rub and then just melts into the closest lap for a hug. It’s safe to say that she is good with people as young as 12 years and possibly younger, although how much younger is not yet known. This is one sweet Springer. Her small stature in no way reflects her big heart, or the need for loving people in her life. It only makes her easier to wrap your arms around!!
