Update 04/27/12:
Carley has been treated for all her intestinal worms. To be sure treatment successfully eliminated all parasites, she will be retested after she returns from the MAESSR picnic in Richmond.
Recently Carley met her foster family’s grandchildren who range in age from 4 to 14 years old. Carley loved the kids and the kids loved Carley!
An indoor accident might occur occasionally, but Carley has transitioned well from being an outside dog to a house dog. She will test her limits at times, such as getting on the furniture, but she listens well when she’s told to get down. When those wonderful kitchen smells start to call her, Carley will stand on her hind legs like a circus dog while checking things out! Is it truly counter-surfing when you’re just taking a peek without any paw contact?
At night, Carley continues to sleep in her crate but, during the day, she and the resident dogs are gated in the kitchen with a pet door to a fenced in yard. She has no interest in jumping the fence, but occasionally she will dig, hoping to find a little critter.
On leash, Carley is walking well; however, she is extremely timid when allowed run in the woods off leash. Upon exiting her foster family’s truck, she will hide under it unless she is lead away on the leash. This allows her to feel comfortable to go run and play.
When it comes to toys, Carley has become the resident hoarder of tennis balls! She always has a ball in her mouth…in her crate…and in her water bowl!
Carley is a sweet Springer girl who is so full of energy and love. She will fit in well with an active, fun-loving family. Just make sure you have a good supply of tennis balls!
Original:
Sweet little Carley came to MAESSR after being relinquished to a New Jersey shelter by her owner who no longer wanted her. She had been used as a hunting dog and was kept outside in the yard with the garage as her shelter.
Carley arrived at her foster home not looking her best. The trauma of being uprooted gave her intestinal distress so her coat was soiled and smelly. Plus, she had extensive matting on her ears and on the rest of her body. Five baths later and countless hours of combing, brushing and cutting, she is a beauty! Her foster parents didn’t use their clippers on her since she was afraid of them. Carley was a good girl for her vet’s appointment although she was very scared. It was apparent that this was something new for Carley. After treatment for a host of intestinal worms, Carley is now a healthy girl!
Since she was solely an outside dog, Carley was not housetrained, but she is working very hard on going outside to eliminate and learning to be the prefect guest. This sweet, gentle girl really wants to please. She is making great strides at learning house manners. Carley doesn’t beg, jump, counter-surf, or get into the trash. She sleeps through the night quietly in her crate, and she is crated when her foster family is at work.
Carley listens well and will sit on command. However, she is very timid on the leash. When she is leashed, she needs to be encouraged to walk. With time and practice, Carley will learn that the leash means walk time and fun! Very good in the car, Carley just naps or puts her head on a friendly human passenger so she can be petted.
Full of energy, Carley loves chasing her tennis balls and, unfortunately, the resident cat! She is good with the resident dogs in her foster home, though.
Carley is going to be a great dog for some lucky family!
