Calvin came to us from a shelter without a shred of information on his former life. He has clearly been on the street as he is very thin, his undercoat is matted, and he has an ear infection and a bad case of worms. However, he remains a sweet, friendly boy who has been affectionate towards everyone he meets (including children). He just seems relieved to be back in a home with people who are nice to him. On his first day at his foster home, Calvin tolerated massive brushing, a bath, and ear cleaning with no protest stronger than walking away. He is very quiet and gentle in the house, and will sit in front of me for pats and offer his paw. He loves to be petted and fussed over.
Calvin is OK on a leash, but that may be because his energy level is low at present. He tends to grab at treats, and jumps on his foster mom when he wants to play. He is very patient with being left alone. He doesn’t like to go in a crate, but we’re working on that. He has done some marking in the house; a refresher course in housebreaking as well as neutering should help this.
We are also working hard on the “wait” command because Calvin is a bolter (his first night he slipped out the gate and was almost hit by a car). He has played some with Gretel, the resident dog in his foster home but has trouble turning his focus from his foster mom. When Gretel barks at him to play, he jumps on his foster mom instead and won’t take his eyes off of her. But he happily joins her in running around the yard and barking at passersby, Winnebagos, and Amish buggies. He’s still not sure that he has to bark at passing trucks.
Calvin will remain in foster care until he receives his second round of wormer, which should be at in the middle of July.
Update:
Calvin has gone to his new home where he will have boys of his own!
