Original: “Callie will make a fabulous companion for someone who wants a love bug with a love of tennis balls!”
When a Pennsylvania rescue group who pulls mill dogs was told of an incoming 9-year-old female Springer who was good with other dogs and kids, they contacted MAESSR for help in placing her. Soon, a kind, patient, quiet foster family was found for her so that Callie could learn how to be an inside dog.
This sweet girl is super affectionate and wants to be touching her person at all times. Callie will lean up against her foster mom for some love every time she sits down, and if her mom puts up her feet, she wants to crawl in her lap. Callie enjoys sleeping on her foster mom’s bed, and while she would love to snuggle all night long, she has learned to sleep on “her side” of the bed. When she’s not being loved on, Callie wants her person to throw her tennis ball. She’ll bring it back and drop it as soon as she catches her breath.
Callie gets along great with the resident male and female Springers. She shows no interest in chasing other animals like squirrels; her tennis ball is all the running and chasing she needs! She has done well with the older neighborhood children (8+ years of age), but she hasn’t been tested with younger children.
Since she joined her foster family, Callie has learned her name, how to take turns getting treats, and “sit.” She is still struggling with the urination part of housetraining but has improved tremendously once she was placed on pain medication for her leg and back. Callie absolutely hates to be crated and has free range of the house at all times with no problems. If she is made to go into the crate, she cries for hours. Even if her food is placed in her open crate, she won’t go in despite her love of food. Callie would love to steal the resident male’s food, but a firm “no” is all that is needed to send her back to her own bowl.
The vet determined that Callie had a broken left back hock at some point in her previous life. It does not look like it was treated, and the radiologist believes that a bone infection led to abnormal bone growth and severe arthritis in the hock. Callie is currently on two low-cost pain medications to control her discomfort. She was an angel at the vet and groomer. Although she doesn’t like her right ear or feet touched, all she does to show her displeasure is try to pull away. No growling or snapping for this sweet girl!
Callie will make a fabulous companion for someone who wants a love bug with a love of tennis balls! She would benefit from regular walks and a strict diet to bring down her weight. And don’t be put off by her age. Senior dogs make the best pets!
