Callie’s prior owner from New Jersey relinquished her to MAESSR after health issues meant that she could no longer care for Callie in the way she thought appropriate.
After a quick three mile hike to wear off some pent up energy after being boarded for a week, Callie settled into her foster home with very little fuss. Her foster folks were surprised at how well adjusted Callie is for her age. She doesn’t rush around burning energy, but is willing to fetch balls for her humans or just hang out grinning. For a two year old, she’s fairly calm, as well as being friendly and outgoing.
Callie and the resident Springer love to play chase and keep-away, but she and the resident terrier aren’t as chummy. Though Callie’s not aggressive, she doesn’t take flak from the resident terrier either. Callie makes a good running partner for her foster parents – she’s up to 3 miles at a shot! Her leash manners could use some work, though. She has a slightly faster gear than a standard walk, so she needs a bit more structure for easy walking, especially when out with her foster sister and the walk turns into a competition for who is ahead! Callie would like to chase squirrels but doesn’t obsess about it.
In terms of training, Callie knows sit, down, and come. She’s learning off, paired with sit, as a substitute to jumping up when greeting humans. With a bit of training she could probably be trusted off leash in protected areas, as she wants to be near her humans. Her foster parents have noted that Callie’s reaction to loud voices is to drop and make herself small, so, training corrections are being done firmly, but not at a high volume. This small girl is intelligent and would enjoy training so she could understand what her humans want.
Housetrained completely, Callie has had no accidents since coming into foster care. She takes care of business quickly when she is taken out on leash. To see her response to being crated, her foster parents put her in the crate where she just sat looking as though she couldn’t figure out what sin she’d committed. Poor baby! At night, she sleeps on a rug near the kitchen table. While she loves her humans, Callie has an independent spirit and doesn’t cling unless invited to cuddle or unless a dog brush is in view, because she loves being brushed.
Callie’s house and car riding manners are being honed currently. She likes car rides but needs to be tethered, so she doesn’t sit on the driver’s lap! Since she’s just learning to keep her four feet on the ground, Callie would probably counter-surf if given much of a chance. Typical of her age, she likes to chew plastic from the recycling bin and remove the innards from the occasional dog toy, but otherwise she doesn’t chew inappropriate things.
All in all, Callie is a really easy dog to have around and will make someone a wonderful companion.
