Original: “His foster dad has Buzz ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ before he crosses the street. He even ‘heels’ very well.”
Buzz came to MAESSR when his Virginia owners moved and could not take him with them. Buzz is an energetic and often precocious young adult. He’s also proving to be a quick study with his training so far.
After some initial awkward getting to know you moments, Buzz has settled in well with both his canine foster brother and sister. He joins them for walks around the neighborhood. After some initial excitement, he walks well on the leash and does not pull or tug. He notices rabbits and squirrels but shows no interest in chasing them. His foster dad has Buzz “sit” and “stay” before he crosses the street. He even “heels” very well. If he seems to want to stay and smell something for more than a few moments, a quick “Come on Buzz” has him falling back in line. He has been good when approached by people who want to meet him although sometimes he will jump up on them. He does bark at some but not all of the dogs he sees while out walking. His foster family is working on correcting these behaviors and they already see some improvement. And as much as he likes to be out for a walk, he loves it when he makes the turn for home. The smart boy quickly figured out which house was his!
Buzz’s house manners are pretty good but he does like to counter-surf. And even though he is high energy, he enjoys relaxing with his foster family. He will try to entice his foster dad into playing with him but if he is told that “now is not the time,” he is content just to hang out. Buzz is completely housetrained and clearly signals when he needs to go outside. He sleeps in his crate on the first floor of his foster family’s house and doesn’t mind going in when it’s time for bed. He is content in his crate until morning.
Buzz enjoys time outside playing ball with his foster siblings in the fenced in yard. He does seem to like it best when the whole family is together. He’s enjoyed several rides in the car but does need to be restrained for everyone’s safety.
The handsome boy let his foster mom do some brushing and combing with some wriggling about but without incident. Buzz does sometimes like to get mouthy when he is being petted, much like a puppy will, but he stops easily when corrected. At the beginning of his vet visit, he snapped at the vet when she began her exam. For caution she took him in the back where a vet tech could hold Buzz for the remainder of the exam. When she brought him back to his foster parents, she said he was very good for the rest of the exam. She said his behavior was not unusual given all the recent change in his life.
Buzz’s foster family is amazed at how well this happy boy is adjusting. They feel that with regular exercise and consistent training, this sweet boy will be a wonderful, loving family member.
