Update 05/25/2023: “His foster mom says Buddy is a good boy and that he’s come a long way in a short time.”
Buddy has been in his foster family for almost a month and his behavior has been getting better daily! Lots of changes have happened in his life. His foster mom changed the food he is eating, he has been neutered, is totally vaccinated, and started on meds to help easy his anxiety. Also, his foster mom has made sure Buddy gets enough exercise so that he’s tired and can relax. All this has improved his behavior. Even the resident dogs have taught Buddy proper play etiquette.
Buddy’s mounting behavior has dissipated and he has found that it’s more fun to play chase and wrestle. His foster mom says Buddy is a good boy and that he’s come a long way in a short time.
Now that he’s learned some manners, Buddy has a better idea of what his perfect home would look like. He would love an active family where he can an active member. He’s love doing things like going hiking, swimming, camping, and even running! The more exercise he gets, the better one can expect him to behave. Do you need a fantastic Buddy in your life?
Original: “Buddy is a quick learner in realizing only good behavior will get him attention.”
When his Pennsylvania owners found Buddy to be too much puppy for them to handle, he was first surrendered to another rescue group who then contacted MAESSR for help in placing him.
Buddy is a very sweet boy who still thinks he’s a small puppy! He will be a great dog but he just has a lot to learn about how to behave inside and with other dogs. When Buddy first arrived in his foster family, he tried to mount the resident dogs who would resist and Buddy would aggressively fight them. This problem dissipated and he seems to have learned that mounting is not acceptable behavior with the resident dogs.
Initially, Buddy would do anything to get attention–good or bad–as long as his people were focused on him. The first week Buddy learned that the only attention he would receive would be positive and poor behavior would result in time outs with no reaction. Buddy is a quick learner in realizing only good behavior will get him attention. He now shares nicely with the resident dogs and shows no resource guarding. Still all puppy, Buddy will play with the resident dogs or his foster family whenever he can.
Basic commands of “off,” “sit,” and “come” are ingrained in this young pup, but walking on a leash is a work in progress. Note that MAESSR will require his adoptive family to take Buddy through two series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. Buddy will be a star pupil!
Crate trained and housetrained, Buddy stands by the back door to let his foster family know he needs to go out. At night and when family members are out of the house, Buddy is crated with no problems. He does not have access to the kitchen so trash diving and counter-surfing have not been issues. He does not do any inappropriate chewing. When he feels like gnawing on something, he grabs a nylabone. When in the fenced yard, Buddy shows no strong prey drive towards the squirrels or birds. He has been separated from the resident cat, but that introduction may happen soon.
Buddy is great in the car and was great at the vet and he enjoys being brushed. A great cuddle companion on the couch, he loves his people.
Buddy’s dream home would be a home with an experienced dog owner who will continue working with Buddy on his social skills. Having a canine playmate would be ideal as he loves other dogs.
