Update 5/6/03:
Buddy was neutered on 4/30/03. He seems to be recovering nicely. He met a cat while at the vet and sniffed a little and turned away. As far as his foster mom knows this was his first cat meeting.
He continues to do well in his foster home. He now goes into his crate freely and knows that at night after he goes out that he is to go directly to his crate which he does and then waits for his treat. He has learned down and paw. He seems to have the housebreaking thing down although when he plays with the resident Springer he needs to go out immediately when they are through or else he may have a little accident by the back door. He is a love bug and very well-mannered in the house.
Original:
Buddy was given up by his previous family because he was not housebroken, he dug holes in the yard and would chew. He also dug under the fence and would visit briefly and then come home.
Since coming to foster care Buddy has done extremely well. He has had only one peeing incident in the house in the last week. He is fine in the crate for up to six hours but when he is out and about the house he does need to go outside every couple of hours. The foster family makes sure that he goes outside and does his business before he is allowed to play, and he has responded very well to that. He has not dug any holes in the yard and is allowed to run free in the yard with supervision. He comes right back when called if he strays too far.
Buddy is very good with children. He has been around children 1, 2, 7, 12, 14, 16. He will greet visitors by jumping up which the foster family is working on. He does not counter surf or try to get into the trash. He does try to chew things if left on the floor but will drop them if told to. He can also be mouthy which the foster family is working on stopping. He is a little bit timid when voices are raised and will roll over on his back if told to do something he does not want to do (like go in his crate). He also may submissively pee. Once in his crate, he is fine – it’s the getting him to go in that takes some coaxing. He wants to be a lap dog and is very happy to join his humans on the furniture or bed. He gets down when told to but clearly would prefer to be nice and close.
Buddy also does very well with other dogs. He knows sit, come and is learning paw and down. He does not mind being brushed (doesn’t really love it though) and has no problems with fooling with his ears or feet. He is getting adjusted to walking on the leash.
Buddy loves to play chase with the resident female Springer and chase balls. He likes rope toys, nylabones, squeaky toys, balls and frisbees. He would love to have a new family to play with and to love.
Are you that family?
