Original: Bucky was turned into a shelter in western Pennsylvania because one of his owners was dealing with serious illness and the other owner could not care for both that person and Bucky. Bucky is a large springer, weighing 64 pounds, and was neutered and had his teeth cleaned just before coming to his foster home. The vet who did the procedures noted an irregularity which his foster dad followed up on immediately. After x-rays and various tests, the diagnosis for Bucky was that he had bladder stones. If left undetected or untreated, this condition could have been deadly. Surgery was required from which Bucky is making a very good recovery. His foster dad suspects this is the first time that Bucky has felt normal for a long time.
While Bucky is mending, further analysis is being done by the U. of Minnesota and a list of preventative suggestions for him will be provided. X-rays will likely be repeated when his stitches come out. For now, it is certain that Bucky will need vet visits for urinalysis every 3 months and a diet of only wet food to guard against recurrence. This doesn’t seem like anything Bucky will mind too much!
What Bucky really likes, though, is when his foster dad sits on the floor and scratches his ears. He is a very kissy dog with a huge head and tongue to match. He has excellent manners and is a real gentleman. He is crate trained, housebroken, and has the run of his foster home. Bucky knows “sit” but needs basic obedience training. Now that he is feeling better, he is starting leash work and his foster family will work on other things with him. He has learned to come to the back door and bark a couple of times when he wants to come in. And, he will bark his request for dinner, too! He is not food aggressive, stays off of furniture and rides very well in a car. He gets along with 2 resident springers and 4 cats in his foster home and follows his foster dad all around.
Bucky is the kind of dog that would be sleeping on the porch floor while his family was in the porch swing. He will be an excellent pet, either by himself, or with other animals. With his health improving, Bucky’s foster family says it’s great to see him becoming more active and getting excited about things. He’ll be ready soon and will be a fine dog for his forever family!!
