When a three year old niece dove under the table to retrieve something she had dropped, Buckley was startled and reacted fearfully but did not bite her. Knowing the unpredictability of young children and having three of their own under six, Buckley’s Pennsylvania owners decided it was in his best interest to be re-homed into a family with older children or teens. So, they contacted MAESSR to get their beloved Springer a more suitable home for his personality.
Buckley immediately settled in at his foster home and has had no issues with aggression here at all. Just the opposite, he gives way to all the other dogs – two residents and a Weimaraner foster. He and the resident Springer quickly bonded and are buddies. This handsome Springer is quiet, completely housetrained, and crate-trained. Although he was crated his first night, he proved to be so well behaved that he gets free roam of the house all of the time now, including when the foster parents are out. The only time he is gated away from the other dogs is at meal time because he is the only non-piggy in the house; otherwise, the others would gobble down Buckley’s meal as well as their own!
With good house manners, Buckley doesn’t counter-surf or trash dive. He does enjoy getting up on benches to get pets and he sleeps on the resident Springer’s day-bed alongside her. He loves to ride in the car, staying in the back untethered, alone or with the other dogs. He knows the commands sit and down, comes when you whistle, and is decent on leash, though he tends to do the Springer nose-cruise routine from going side-to-side as you’re trying to move forward. Hey, Buckley doesn’t want to lose a scent! He loves to hold toys in his mouth and play keep away, but let’s go whenever the humans or other dogs tug at the toy. Mellow indoors, Buckley is playful outside, and probably would do fine off leash in a safe area. He’s shown no signs of separation anxiety while the humans are away, but wags happily on their return.
Since Buckley hasn’t been subjected to clippers in his five years, he was skittish at the noisy pet store so his foster mom decided to wait for a calmer atmosphere to introduce the little guy to a haircut. Reportedly, he also fears vacuums and loud noises, though he was fine recently through a loud thunderstorm; he just hung out near the humans.
Ideally in his new forever home, Buckley would like another dog for play and company since he’s had a canine companion his whole life. Buckley’s foster mom thinks that he’s one of those A+ Springers that comes through from time to time making the fostering process extremely easy and enjoyable. If you’re looking for a Springer cuddle-bug that is well-mannered, non-needy, quiet, and usually grinning, consider bringing Buckley into your family!
