Original: Bubba was surrendered by his owner who is older and unable to care for all three of his dogs. In fact, we expect we may get another of the dogs into rescue as well. Bubba gets along well with other dogs but has been trying to usurp the household’s dominant dog. He would do best as an only dog, with a submissive dog, or in an experienced dog household. He gets along well with the third dog in the house and is fine with other dogs that he meets. He is good with kids, but perhaps too high energy for really small children. He is good with cats, but might chase them given a chance. Bubba is trained to hunt and was out with his owner this past season. He travels well in a car, is crate trained and housebroken. He is being brought into foster care where he will be neutered, tested for heartworm and put on preventative. Bubba is a great dog, who would do well in a household with older kids looking for a buddy to play with, perhaps in a hunting home, or any other high activity household.
UPDATE: September 3, 1999
Bubba, now Mitch, is much sweeter and gentler than we expected. He has shown no aggression, but a lot of fear. He responds like a puppy mill dog, unwilling to stand up straight while on a leash, tentative, unsure. His foster home is working with him on confidence and basic obedience commands. He has had one or two problems with the foster home’s alpha dog, but we’re not sure of the source yet. Mitch would make someone a great bird dog. He has flushed all the birds out of the yard and out of the bird baths and almost caught two. Mitch is easily bonded to people. He loves to be petted and brushed while watching TV. He likes tennis balls, but so far has no idea that he should bring them back after he catches! He knows down and sit. Put stays are not in his vocabulary yet. He counter-surfs, but gets his front feet off when asked. He has no other problems in the house. He loves milk bones and treats.
UPDATE: November 1, 1999
Mitch is doing great in his foster home, but is ready for a forever home. He is very sweet and shy, but not soft. Like many dogs who spent their formative years in a kennel the big bold world easily intimidates him. His new home would have to commit to continuing his socialization without pushing him into situations that are too scary. He still pulls on leash. But, he knows sit, down and is learning more. He welcomes strangers readily. A household with a lot of kids may be a bit much for him. He is battling an ear infection but that should be cleared up soon.
UPDATE:
From his adoptive home:
Just wanted to let you know how Mitch is doing. It’s hard for me to believe the he has adjusted so well and so quick!! He has pretty well made friends with the cats (at least he doesn’t chase them any more!). He stays in the yard good when we are out, just follows me around and runs around the woods. He has calmed down so much he is really a joy to be around. He has learned to the catch a Frisbee and return it to me… (most of the time!!).. he can be sitting beside me when I throw it and still catch it in the air!! He has learned to stay and come very well.. will lay down when and where I tell him to. He loves to ride in my truck (on the front seat!!) but it puts him to sleep most of the time..he will lay in the truck fine if I get out. We have taken him to the beach a few times and he loves it!!..walks well on his lead and loves to chase the seagulls!!, I look forward to it getting warm because I know he will love to go in the water!! He likes the snow too!!..so I would say he is a well rounded friend!! When I am off he pretty well stays with me ALL the time!!,when my daughter comes home it makes her mad!! ..she says “does that dog follow you EVERYWHERE???” ..pretty much!!..he is just getting where he doesn’t get up and follow me if he is laying down sleep. He sleeps at my feet when I do my paperwork (and write e-mail!!) He still sleeps in his crate when we go to bed, he doesn’t seem to mind it.. we just say “time for bed” and he goes out and gets in!! Well that’s just about it..thanks so much for saving Mitch..he has really become a good friend!!!
UPDATE:
Mitch is doing GREAT, every week he gets better. He now can catch a Frisbee really good!! he is now very calm in the house and in the yard, he knows that he can’t go out of the yard…..will sit and stay until I tell him to move..will get “down” when I tell him and drop the ball. I stay at the beach on Tue and Fri, Sat, and part of Sun…he goes to work with me and stays in the truck while I am in the stores until we go by our house at the beach then I drop him off…he knows to stay in the yard there too..he also knows to be very careful in the sand around the house because of the cactus and sand spurs!!he stays out all the time I’m home there…he “poops” in his “spot” as we walk with no trouble at all..he is getting better with strangers and other dogs don’t bother him at all, he just walks on by as they bark at him!!..speaking of barking..I can ask Mitch a question and follow it with “tell me” and he will speak!!..cool!!..the cats now love him too, they get along fine, one will even rub all under his neck and around his legs!!…he has also learned not to eat there food!!..there bowl can be full and he will not eat it!!..does it sound like I am bragging??? he is just so smart..nobody can believe we just got him around Christmas!!…..that’s about all I can think of right now but I’m sure there is more!!!…about the hunting training, I can’t go because it’s my busy time of year, but thanks for thinking of us!!…I would really like for us to get together some time so you can see how well Mitch has adjusted..it’s just so hard for me to believe it!!!
