Update 08/19/09: The only things keeping Budda in his foster home are a few stitches that remain from his neutering. They come out soon and then he will be ready for his fur ever home.
Bubba is doing fine with living in a house. However, he will take advantage of items left lying around in his reach. A slipper and a sneaker left out recently have become confetti! He is doing very good with his crate training and has been left for 2-3 hours with no problems. Bubba will go right in the crate without any more than calling his name. He is doing well on a leash and stays close by when turned loose in a safe area.
This pup is coming out of his shell with each passing day and has realized that those around him are there to love him. He is a great little dog and will be a welcome addition to any family that makes him their own!!!
Original: When their owner could no longer afford to keep Bubba K and housemate Sprite, these Springers were taken to a Pennsylvania shelter. MAESSER was contacted and this pair was brought into foster care.
Bubba K (now called Buddy by his foster family) seemed to go through a stage of depression for several days after being separated from his friend Sprite. He would sit quietly alone and would give a submissive look when approached. Showing the resilience of Springers, Bubba K has been gaining confidence while in his foster home. The two resident Springers, who play with each other quite often, worked hard to get Bubba K engaged in their games. As the days go by, he is becoming comfortable keeping stride with them as they run around the yard. There were a few tense moments when Bubba K gave some defensive grumblings when the other Springers tried to lay down to close to him; however, this quickly subsided, and this Springer trio happily flops down together wherever they like.
This young pup has done well in the house with his housetraining having only one accident in the learning curve of a new home. His foster family has not used the crate with Buddy Bubba although he does like to rest under the edge of the chairs and tables perhaps indicating he may do well in a crate. Since he is trustworthy, Bubba K has free run of the house with the resident dogs when his foster family is out of the house. When bedtime rolls around, he prefers sleeping in his safe spot under the edge of the bedroom chair or in the clothes basket rather than sleeping on the bed.
His foster family finds Bubba K quite endearing. With 3 kids ranging in age from 11 to 17, he has lots of human playmates in addition to his canine ones. He loves children and greets them with his long tail wagging. Soon his foster family will have preschoolers visiting, so look for an update on how Bubba K does with them. His behavior with the resident dogs has quickly become a true friendship. He has also been exposed several types of animals including cats, whitetail deer fawns, chickens, ducks, and even an African Green Monkey! He has shown little or no interest in anything beyond a quick sniff as he walked by. Good boy, Bubba K!
Even though summer vacation is still in full tilt for his human foster siblings, Bubba K is beginning to brush up on his schooling in preparation for his forever home. He is learning to walk nicely on the leash, sitting or lying down when leash handler stops. He also responds to come when he is outside, unleashed in the yard. This is only a partial kudo, however, since Bubba K is still learning his name and will come when a resident dog’s name is called! When he returns from his walk, he is learning to sit on command to receive his treat. Since he is younger than 1, MAESSR requires that Bubba K’s forever home must take him to obedience lessons. This helps to form a wonderful bond between the newly adopted Springer and his family and enables the family to have a canine companion who is mannerly and safe.
For a young dog, Bubba K is mostly laid back and very calm. His foster family has had some chewing issues with him, but they have tried to keep things picked up so as not to tempt him. A sneaker left on the floor became irresistible and fell victim. Unfortunately, he has shown no interest in chew toys yet. He does love to go along on car rides, and he is a very nice passenger.
MAESSR will need to find a forever home for this guy quickly since his foster dad is falling fast for this one! Bubba K has quickly become a very loving and calm companion. He is quite a wonderful little dog.
