When Bubba’s male owner passed away, he and his litter brother Bolt were too much for the elderly wife to take care of, so they were reluctantly turned over to MAESSR. Both are well behaved, completely housetrained. They don’t really have a signal to go out but a 4 hour daytime rule plus an overnight reliability rule seem fine for them. Since Bubba just flops under the table to sleep at night or near the window during the day, he’s not currently using a crate. Reportedly he was crated at night by his male owner. He’ll occasionally go into an open one for comfort. When the humans are away, he’s just gated into the same 4 rooms as the resident dogs.
If his foster mom had to pick one sin for Bubba it’s that he’s a bit food obsessed, whimpering softly while meals are tossed into dog bowls, inhaling anything in the bowl once it is put down for meals. He’s not at all food aggressive, happily sharing a bowl with his brother if need be. He lets his person take high value bones out of his mouth with a “woe is me” look on his face. He just loves his chow. Reportedly he would eat mulch when at his prior home, occasionally getting stopped up from the roughage.
Bubba’s a “4 paws on the ground” sort of guy, doesn’t counter-surf nor trash dive. But if anything resembling food hits the floor, no need to bring out a broom! He stays off furniture, and waits before rushing out the door, except when there’s a chipmunk in view out the window. He’s not bird obsessed, nor that passionate about squirrels. But, chipmunks seem to be a thing for him.
This handsome guy knows “sit,” and isn’t bad on leash, though he does the Springer “anchor” sometimes when he hits a smell. He just wags at folks he sees on walks, and doesn’t mind other dogs, greeting them curiously. In the car, he’ll pant a little bit initially but is quiet, has no car sickness and settles down in the back for road trips. His former family had a pool and he stayed away from it, so not really a swimmer.
Bubba doesn’t play that much. He’ll retrieve a stuffed animal or chase after the resident hound because he thinks something interesting must be going on. His energy level is medium. He flops during the work day but springs up with a wagging tail if anyone picks up a leash. He very rarely barks, being a quiet “talker” if encouraged.
Bubba showed up on meds for an ear infection. He allows for meds and deep cleaning with no issues at all. The infection is fairly cleared up, but is something to watch for, as it’s occurred in the past. Reportedly he’s also had skin dryness issues in the past, but doesn’t currently. He loves being groomed. At the vet, he just sighed and got his shots and blood pull without any drama.
Bubba and Bolt came in as a bonded set. Of the two, Bubba seems to be the leader. Their foster mom is unsure how they would be if separated. They don’t do everything together but do have a comfort level as a set that’s wonderful to see, flopping 6 inches apart, eating or drinking from the same bowl. They seem to think that other dogs should share their lack of concern over personal space, but even the older sight hound quickly helped them set boundaries. Bubba is just marking time until he gets a new special person. He’s good with both men and women but his extra waggage shows that he’s used to having a male owner.
