Bryck came to MAESSR when his Maryland owner’s illness left her without the strength to care for him. He is a tall and handsome, happy and gentle English Springer Spaniel who loves running around his foster home’s fenced backyard trying to flush out critters in the banks of day lilies and bushes. He will play ball and Frisbee out back, but is generally in perpetual motion, tracking down scents from the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and occasional groundhog who duck under the gate at his foster home. Bryck also has the ability to see things invisible to the human eye and will try to catch these unidentified objects indoors and outside. According to his former owner, Bryck loves going to the beach, swimming, and visiting the dog park. He has been a good traveler in the car and prefers to ride shotgun so he can keep an eye out for birds and other critters along the way.
While Bryck is very energetic in the yard and on walks, he is calm in the house. He is getting along well with the resident male Springer and there seems to be a budding romance with the resident female beardie mix. Overall, he has been a great houseguest. He hasn’t had any accidents, and will go to the back door when he wants to go out. He has not displayed any anxiety or resource guarding and does well with limited free reign of the house while his foster mom is at work. His previous owners crate-trained Bryck, and he has independently laid in the crate on several occasions at his foster home. At night, Bryck would prefer to sleep with his foster mom, but she has been encouraging him to use the dog pillow beside the bed. Bryck hasn’t touched any of foster mom’s belongings, chewed anything inappropriate, counter-surfed, begged for food, bothered the trash, or jumped on people since his arrival. What a good boy! He was also a perfect gentleman for his bath. Bryck hasn’t barked much, although he will sometimes join in when his canine foster siblings start. His bark could easily deter would-be prowlers!
This smart boy knows many commands, including sit, shake, stay, out, and down. He sits nicely to get his treats and accepts them gently. Bryck usually comes when called, although if he has seen a rabbit in the yard his recall is not very good! Because of this, his foster mom believes that he should not be trusted off leash since he might not come back if he caught the scent of a rabbit. Bryck is in need of a refresher course in walking on the leash. His previous owner used a prong collar, probably due to his strength and desire to chase wildlife. At first, Bryck was a handful at the local duck pond as he tried to chase the ducks. He is improving with continued work in this area.
Possessing excellent manners with humans, canines, and felines alike, Bryck would make a great addition to a number of homes. He was raised with a child with special needs and although he is probably a little too exuberant for a home with toddlers, he would do well with older children. Bryck is an energetic fieldie boy who is sure to liven up any home lucky enough to adopt him!
