Update 01/18/10:
Brutus saw the vet in the last few days and she said he looked wonderful and was ready for adoption. It is going to be a bittersweet day for the foster family. Brutus is just an all around wonderful dog! He walks well on a leash, gets along with the resident cat and dog and children. Brutus loves his morning walks and loves to chase his balls. He is adorable carrying around two balls at the same time! You have to see it to believe it.
He is well behaved in the house except for grabbing the occasional toilet paper roll or something similar laying around. He does not counter surf or pay any attention to the trash. Brutus has no food aggression and could care less if the resident Springer tries to grab his food instead of hers (She thinks his is more delicious). He still stays in his crate when his foster mom has to run out for an errand and he has no problem running to get in his crate when his foster mom says “Do you want a cookie?” What a great boy. A lucky person/family will get to welcome Brutus into their lives soon.
Update 01/15/10:
Brutus has had his second surgery! He is doing so well……he is using both of his back legs, walking normally and wanting to play fetch already! He is eating well and enjoying his life here at his foster home.
Brutus walks with his foster mom everyday. He is a good boy on a leash. He really wants to play ball in the backyard but his foster mom wants him to heal a little more before he starts running around the backyard. Right now he has settled for the walk on the leash and carrying 2 balls in his mouth, so he will be ready when the day comes and he can chase the ball.
He and the resident foster occasionally still “argue” over a toy but the foster mom is able to control the situation and teach Brutus how to share. There are have plenty of balls for everyone! Brutus has absolutely no food aggression towards the resident springer or people.
Brutus and the resident cat has become very close. When the resident cat comes inside, she likes to rub on Brutus’s chin. Quite impressive for a dog that has never seen a cat before!
Brutus enjoys the resident children, ages 9 and 6. They run up to him and hug him and he likes the attention. This happy boy should be ready for his forever home soon. 2010 will be a great year for Brutus as he will enjoy a new exciting pain free life!
Original:
When young, handsome Brutus was relinquished to MAESSR by his New Jersey owners, he had terrible hip dysplasia and cherry eyes. Each of his hip bones was two inches out of socket, causing him to live in considerable pain. MAESSR veterinarians determined that he needed two very expensive surgeries on his hips.
Brutus has had his first FHO surgery on his left hip and is recovering very nicely. He also had surgery for his cherry eyes and now his beautiful eyes are no longer covered partially by the cherries. In three weeks, Brutus will have another FHO surgery on his right hip, His foster parents are hoping for a quick recovery for him so that he will be able to run pain free for the first time in a very long time!
Despite of the discomfort he was experiencing, Brutus is an all-around nice boy. His foster family has a three year old female Springer and she gets along with Brutus fine. He occasionally has some “possessive toy” issues which are kept to a minimum by his foster mom’s intervention. He also lives with a resident cat about which he is very curious. Brutus thinks the cat is fun! If she runs, he wants to chase her, but otherwise pays no attention to her. Brutus listens to his foster mom and if he hears a correction, he stops immediately. There are also two children in his foster family– ages six and nine– and Brutus gets along with them nicely.
Housetrained and crate trained, Brutus remains crated when his foster mom has to run out for an errand; otherwise, he has free reign of the house. With nice house manners, Brutus does not counter-surf nor does he bother the trash or chew inappropriately. He does not try to get on any furniture, either. He loves dog toys and only chews on them. This boy has a medium energy level and walks very well on a leash. At night, he sleeps right next to his foster mom, on a blanket beside her bed all night. Brutus likes to be near his family. What a good boy!
Watch for updates on Brutus’s progress after his next surgery. Brutus would make a great additional to anyone wanting a true companion.
