Updated 9/5/07: When Brownie was under for his neutering procedure, he had a small surgical repair done. An umbilical hernia was corrected and he has made a great recovery from all. He is full of himself like a typical ESS. As he continues to settle in with his foster family, he is trying to become more dominant. He is still getting used to household noises and activities and is yet easily startled by the shenanigans of the resident 9-year-old boy.
Brownie is proving to be one fine guard dog! It sounds like you have a large mastiff when he barks. He also barks when the recliner squeals or there are other new or sudden noises. A bit ironic, this youngster with the big voice is a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to new people or new things but in good Springer fashion, he warms up quickly. He is ready to begin learning the noises of his adoptive home and to share his energy and antics with the people to whom he will devote himself forever.
Original: Brownie’s father has been deployed and a young, active adolescent springer is too much for his pregnant mother. Brownie is a big, playful pup, already tipping the scales at over 50 pounds, and is going to be one large, beautiful springer when he matures. He is tall and has a large head. He lived with a slightly younger female ESS in his original home and is doing well with the three older neutered males in his foster home. Brownie is a typical springer puppy– go, go, go! He loves to run and will try to chase anything that moves. He is getting used to the resident 9-year-old boy and household noises and activities.
Brownie is housetrained but needs to work on his house manners. His head is just above the garbage can level, making it sometimes just too tempting. He also enjoys counter surfing as much as the next Springer and his foster family is working on that as well. He tries to get on the furniture. Although he is not reliable to “come,” Brownie knows the basic commands of “sit” and “come.” He drops and rolls if you try to hook him up to the leash or do anything to him. He pulls when walked and is working on his leash manners. There’s just so much to learn!! Brownie loves to go for rides and is clearly used to tagging along for trips. He reportedly loves playing on the beach.
His bark is incredibly deep. Brownie is very vocal and does not like to be left behind if you move to another part of the house where he can’t be with you. He will also bark and scratch the door to get to you. Brownie can only be left alone in a dog-proof environment. If you don’t want to find shredded paper when you get home, he needs to be crated. Brownie resists going in the crate but is slowly adjusting.
Brownie is a typical, adolescent English Springer Spaniel who is learning his boundaries. He has a great temperament and loves being with his people. Their attention is at the top of his “favorites” list. He is in excellent health and will be complete on his vetting in the next few days. Shortly after, he will be ready to go, go, go with a new family who can give him all the love and attention that a growing ESS needs.
