Updated 6/10/07: Brittany is doing better every day. She came away from her last vet visit with a good report. The fissure in the roof of her mouth that resulted from the gunshot wound is down to about 3 centimeters. She is not happy with having her mouth examined but does not show any aggression while the vet is working with her. Those around her cannot see that she is in any pain and she is cleared for weaning onto solid kibble. Another small point on the medical front: there is still some question about a possible urinary tract infection. Lab results from a urinalysis are coming.
In every other way, Brittany is making wonderful progress too. She is really coming out of her shell and is starting to check everything out and get into things. Yeah!! She had a run-in with a cat recently and it about scared her to death! She had some visitors from California and, after a little hesitation, she showed them a true Southern welcome. She acts as if nothing traumatic has ever happened to her and will be ready for a forever family very soon. What resilient girl!!! Many thanks to everyone for your donations, thoughts, and prayers for this sweet, sweet gal.
Original: Brittany is a petite, shy female springer who would like to spend all of her time in your lap while you stroke her ears. She was apparently used for breeding, but was spayed after arriving in Richmond. She was found bleeding by the roadside in Campbell County, Virginia. The Animal Control Officer who found her thought she had been struck by a car, but the vet who examined her discovered she had been shot in the mouth. She has had three operations and is on the mend. She is still on soft food and may be so for some time.
Brittany knows to come and pulls only slightly when walking on the leash. She will offer you her paw to get your attention and will jump on you for the same reason. Her foster parents are working on this issue. Brittany goes into her crate willingly and sits on command most of the time. She is a good passenger in the car. She does not roll over for belly rubs, but likes to have her ears and head stroked. Brittany is willing to have her mouth examined without protest and shows no food aggression. She has been in the garbage once when there was a very tempting item right on top. She is not tall enough to counter surf but will try to see what’s going on when her food is being prepared. Her foster parents are working on this, too. Brittany has been given soft toys and keeps them in her crate.
Brittany has not barked since she arrived at her foster home. She has just started wagging her tail. She definitely has a way to go before she can be described as a wiggle butt. Brittany is still healing and her vet will have to release her for hard foods. Therefore, she cannot play with a ball or chew on a bone at this point. But if you look at her photograph, you can see a hint of an impish look in her eyes.
Keep watching for updates on this sweet, resilient springer girl as her foster family’s love and care help to bring her back to physical and emotional health.
