Updated 2/8/06: Often a dog’s temperament does not unfold until it has been in foster care for a time. Sadly, for Britt, there were incidents of snapping and biting in his foster home, and MAESSR determined that it was impossible to offer him for adoption.
Original: Britt is a very lucky senior. He was in a shelter in central Maryland. He had really impressed the staff with his friendliness to people and his good nature with other dogs and cats. An effort was made to track down his owner through his rabies tag but to no avail. The shelter kept him as long as possible, hoping his owner would call. Just one day before his time would have been up, MAESSR was able to bring him into its care.
Britt’s first stop after leaving the shelter was the vet’s office with a MAESSR volunteer. He took all of the poking and prodding of a thorough exam quite calmly. He even gave a few kisses to faces that got close to his while on the exam table. He seems to be in good health with just a few short term needs.
He tested moderately positive for Lyme disease and is starting on antibiotics which will bring a cure. He has two cysts on his back and a 2-3 inch skin tag which will be removed when he is neutered. Just to be on the safe side, a geriatric blood panel was run which will help determine when the surgery can be done. His ears are clean, he has good hearing, his eyes are part of his most handsome attributes, and his teeth are in good condition. Britt is a little on the thin side, but regular meals, and generous treats, will remedy that quickly!!
To cover his needs, Britt will be staying with the vet for a few days. While there, he will get a much-needed bath, and the worst of his mats will be clipped out of his long, silky coat. With a fresh, clean smell, and a final grooming, it will be impossible to resist loving on this fellow. He’s very accepting of attention and shows not one minute of aggression. He has briefly encountered children and was excited. Another chance to meet and play with them should come soon.
Sitting is one command that Britt knows and that may be the only one. More will be learned about his house manners as he settles into his foster home. For now, it is quite enough that his sweet, friendly charm wins over people around him and brings smiles. His foster mom knows that he “is a great dog and that someone will really love him” when he moves into their life, as he has hers.
More soon on Britt.
