Update 12/30/04:
The news is all good for Britney as she has worked through health issues with her vet and foster family. She had a much-needed dental cleaning that included the removal of 5 teeth. She is rebounding from the surgery. Her gums are tender but should be healed in about two weeks. A recheck for whip worms will be done shortly to assure they are all gone for this girl. She had also been guarding her hips somewhat, so an x-ray was done. Fortunately, it showed good hips, and although she has some bone spurs on her spine, the vet advised that they should not be a concern. Britney’s separation anxiety seems to be getting a little better as she learns her foster family always returns. Also, she has the company of the resident male dog. She knows “sit” and “NO!” and loves to ride in the car. When given the chance, she will want to sit in one’s lap, but she does not counter-surf. She goes to the back door when she needs to go out, having learned that from the resident dog, and graciously receives a dog cookie when she returns.
Britney is a very sweet dog and a bit docile. She will be ready soon for an adopting family who will treat her with gentleness and lavish her with their love and time. A resident canine buddy to help keep her company in her new home would be a bonus!
Original: Britney was relinquished to a shelter by her owner. The owner either didn’t have time for her or couldn’t manage her, reporting her to be an escape artist. She was adopted briefly from the shelter but was returned for destructive behavior and barking. The shelter arranged for Britney to go into MAESSR’s care because they felt she was great with people of all ages and with other dogs. She showed some separation anxiety while with them, attaching to the first person who would show her love and care. Their assessment has been largely what her MAESSR foster family has experienced since having her in their home, minus the destruction.
Her foster family finds Brittany to be a delightful and very friendly dog. She loves to hang out with people, get petted, and go out for walks. She is OK on a leash and house trained. She can be put in a create but she is not happy to be in one. Since in foster care, her family has left her at home with free run of the house and she does fine. She has not destroyed anything or messed in the house, but she will bark when left home alone.
Britney’s foster family says she is not only good with other dogs but with other little critters, like hamsters and turtles, as well. She shows interest in them but not enough to annoy or scare them. At this time, she is unknown with cats.
Toys and playtime have apparently not been a large part of Britney’s life. Her family is introducing her to both. She has some begging issues but does not counter-surf or steal food.
Britney has a few medical concerns that will require further vet evaluation. She is scheduled for teeth-cleaning with possible extractions. She has a couple of fatty tumors in her belly region and is very protective of her hip area. When this is complete, she will be ready for an adopting family to love and care for her. Her foster family feels she would do best in a setting where her people are home with her a lot. They also feel that she should not be placed with very young children because of her sensitivity in the hindquarters. Britney is a mature springer who needs to bond with a family to be happy and secure. If you have ample time to share with her, you will likely find this friendly gal to be a delightful companion too.
