Brett was found by an animal warden with a wound on his head which was badly infected and bare patches of skin on his back near his tail. He was taken to an overcrowded Pennsylvania shelter where he spent the majority of the next few days in a crate due to a lack of available runs. Then, he was rescued by MAESSR. During this time, Brett’s head wound was healing, he was brought up to date on shots, given medication for his skin, and neutered. Despite this whirlwind of attention, Brett has turned out to be a mellow sort of guy. It’s clear to his foster mom that at some time in his past life, he was cared for and treated well.
Housetrained and possessing good house manners in general, Brett is easy to have around. He doesn’t get up on furniture at all, even when tempted by his foster sister’s comfy daybed or invited by his foster parents. He’s thinking about checking out the trash can but understands when told no. Brett crates without too much fuss at bedtime, and spends time gated out of the kitchen when his foster parents are out. He knows a few commands, like sit and down and is learning how to give paw. Brett also comes when called and can be trusted off-leash in safe areas. At some point, Brett was trained to catch things in the air and return them with a soft mouth. He’ll catch and return a ball, but isn’t obsessive about it; it’s just something to do because he thinks it makes his humans happy.
Brett gets along well with the two visiting kids (ages 9 and 13) in his foster home, and cohabits well with another Springer and two terriers, not showing any aggression at all. To the contrary, they’d steal his food if they weren’t watched. Brett has low energy inside, content to just hang out, but will walk or run outside for as long as someone is willing to go. In an afternoon trip to a local state park with the resident female Springer, Brett demonstrated that he loved the water. He didn’t quite grasp the other dog’s river otter type swimming abilities, but obviously enjoying being wet and going in over his head. His foster mom had guessed he’d be that way, because he stepped right into the baby pool used for cooling down in the back yard.
Brett is an average size male, weighing about 50 pounds. He doesn’t have separation anxiety but like most Velcro Springers he prefers to be with his foster folks, flopped at their feet while they watch TV or eat or go out walking. Brett is good on leash and in the car; in general, he’s just easy to have around. He likes being brushed and is currently using special shampoo to help his dry skin along.
This friendly boy is just waiting for a good home. He’s happy with his foster parents but would love a place to settle in permanently and get on with being the resident Springer.
