Original: Brentan’s incredibly steady, sweet temperament has carried him well through a month of change. His original family turned him into a shelter in southern West Virginia because they were moving and couldn’t take him along. They said he was good with kids and cats. He also was intact, so after a short stay at the shelter, he moved to an animal hospital in the area for neutering, an exam, and updating on his vaccinations.
Unfortunately, along the way, he picked up a nasty kennel cough which required treatment and extended his stay with the vet. When his foster mom picked him up, he still had a few days of isolation to endure in his foster home. He is just now getting to do the things a normal dog does. And, he has a clean bill of health!! At 53 pounds he could still add a few pounds as he matures. He also sports a handsome and fully feathered tail.
This is a very relaxed and submissive fellow. He gets along well with the two small resident dogs and his foster springer brother. His main interest is getting petting and belly rubs from his foster mom. He hasn’t shown interest in toys or playing yet but is being encouraged by both his foster mom and the springer. He has met visitors to the home with good manners and shows his affection by laying on their feet. He has briefly met children at the town park and accepted their attention so nicely.
Brentan is crate-trained, housebroke, has passed up chances to counter-surf and pick trash, and sleeps bedside at night with the rest of the family. He doesn’t chew or show any signs of being food possessive. He doesn’t seem to know many commands but is very attentive and would learn quickly. He walks incredibly well on a leash and has sat patiently while his foster mom visited with friends and their dogs in the park. Wow!!
Being close to people is really important to this dog. His foster mom found this out the first time she let him into the exercise pen and went to mow grass. Within a minute Brentan had topped the 4′ fence and came to help her. Another time he started over while she was sitting in the pen but was petting another dog. He is not possessive of her but really craves attention. Brentan is ready for a forever family who will return the gentle attention he gives to all. He could fit in with other pets or enjoy the benefits of being an “only” dog, as long as there are loving people in his new beginning.
