Update 02/18/10:
The latest news on Breezy has arrived and, of course, it’s all good. This little sweetie is making all the progress you want to see in a pup her age.
In the last two weeks, Breezy has come a long way with potty training. She will fly out the back door with the big girls and go potty outside. Yahoooo!! She is good for about 5 hours, more sometimes. She will fuss when she needs to go out during the night or early morning but that is only once; then she is good for another 5 hours. There are still a few accidents in the house, but that is part of having a growing puppy in the family. She still has all the right instincts in her crate and keeps it clean all the time.
Breezy plays hard with the resident dogs and with toys. She listens really well when told “no, no” or “down” and sits for a cookie. There is no more “climbing” up pant legs to get attention. With a little more time to develop her muscles and coordination, she has learned to jump and leap. Fun to watch and yet another antic to be shaped in a youngster.
Breezy is a bundle of joy! She’s gotten off to a great start with the love and guidance of her foster family. She likes to mimic the “big” girls in her home and has become comfortable with sharing space with other dogs. She’s at a perfect stage to “leap” into the life of a family that will be her very own.
Needs to learn further obedience? Yes. Needs a little more time before sleeping through the night? Yes. Needs laps and toys and maybe a canine buddy? Yes. The rewards of investing your heart in her? Priceless!
Update 02/01/10:
Breezy is a pistol. She makes her foster family laugh as she plays and has them in the category of spoiling her as much as possible! This is one smart pup!!!
Amid the entertainment that comes with having a puppy in the home, Breezy’s family is also giving her all the love and guidance a youngster needs to get off to a great start. One skill they are working very hard on is house training. Breezy’s foster mom has never seen a pup that can run, squat, and pee without stopping before; the good news is that Breezy does not soil in her crate and she has been left in it successfully for up to 3 hours. She’s far enough along with her training that she tries to let you know she has to go out sometimes by barking. She’s headed in the right direction and will increase her time with practice and praise.
Breezy is working on obedience and house manners too. She seems to be very smart and will pick things up quickly. She will “sit” for 3 seconds for a cookie! She responds really well for a pup to “no.” She plays great with her toys and has not chewed on “no no” stuff. She almost always “comes” when called and if caught coffee table-surfing, she will get down when told. She just about has “sit” and “down” under her belt. Crate training is ongoing. Breezy sleeps in one at night alongside her foster mom’s side of the bed and naps in it in the living room during the day. She loves to go into a crate with toys and plays with them there.
As with all MAESSR youngsters under one year of age, Breezy’s adopting family will be required to take her to an obedience class. The benefits that come from a pup and her family learning the basics together in a group setting is simply invaluable.
This is a gentle pup. You can touch her anywhere. When her foster mom cleaned her ears, Breezy was great!! She loves to snuggle and with her puppy toenails, she can climb up one’s leg into a lap. She allows her foster mom to hold and rock her, or, to just pet and touch and kiss on her! Yes, this one loves her people. On these very cold days, she allows her family to put a coat or sweater on her and she will wear them. Yes, she’s being spoiled in all the right ways.
Breezy loves the resident dogs too. She wants the two Brits to play with her and does figure eights under them to get their attention. If allowed at dinner time, Breezy will climb up and eat out of their bowls. She loves to run around with them outside and keeps up really well. Breezy tries to be just like the big girls by imitating them. She loves to snuggle next to them if they will let her.
Overall Breezy is going to make the perfect pet for some lucky family– puppy stage through old age. She is very inquisitive. She makes those around her laugh out loud and amazes them as they watch that little brain of hers work. Sometimes you can just imagine her thinking, “What do I want to play with now?” Breezy is all puppy and a little bundle of joy!!! She’s puppy perfect!
Original:
Everyone loves puppies, so there is always lots of excitement when MAESSR brings little ones into its care. This time is no different. A litter of 6 Springer mix babies were dropped at a shelter in South Carolina, all in need of care and homes, so MAESSR is helping. Since they were without names, lots of suggestions by volunteers and members of the main MAESSR group list were made over the days before their arrival. With many great and fitting themes to pick from, names bringing to mind South Carolina won out, so with 4 females and 2 males, they are Breezy, Dewey, Myrtle, Pawley, Sunny, and Surfer. Springer Air sped them north and each pup is now in its foster home.
At approximately 10-12 weeks old, each puppy is ADORABLE beyond words. Like her siblings, Breezy is off to a great start in her foster home. She is a snuggler. Her foster family is not sure she will ever go in crate. Of course, it has only been a day that Breezy has been working on this. She loves to play and lay with the other dogs in her foster home as well.
More news will come as unique personalities emerge and each puppy makes progress. Soon they will be ready for loving families who will take them to obedience classes, be their new playmates and soon their very best friends. Check back soon! This won’t take long!
