Brandy was turned in to a West Virginia shelter the week of Christmas. A dedicated MAESSR volunteer made a long trip on Christmas Eve to get Brandy so she would not have to spend Christmas in a shelter. Brandy was worth the long drive!
While residing in her first foster home, Brandy was taken to the vet for a checkup. She had a mass on her stomach which turned out to be an inguinal hernia. This was repaired when was spayed. She’s now in good health except for some stiffness in her hips. A daily supplement is proving beneficial for her comfort and Brandy will need to stay on this for the rest of her life.
Following her surgery, Brandy went to a second foster family and is now living on their farm. How lucky for her! This extremely sweet girl rides well in the car, walks well on the leash, and also is crate-trained and housetrained. She has been very well behaved with the other dogs in her foster home. Brandy loves to play with toys and has been known to steal children’s toys and take them to her crate. When introduced to the resident cat, Brandy just sniffed when the kitty was being held. The first time the cat walked into a room, however, Brandy took off immediately after her. Brandy’s foster mom suspects that she would probably chase cats just to get a sniff and say hello before leaving them alone.
With the young children in her foster home, Brandy is great for the most part. She is, however, very interested in ”people food” and will view a child holding food as an easy mark. She will follow a child and even her foster mom to the table trying to get plated food, so her new lesson is learning to quietly lie down when her people are beginning a meal. Her counter-surfing tendencies will be addressed as well.
At night Brandy would prefer to sleep with her foster parents but she’s learning that she needs to be in her crate. Her very adorable, but persistent, howling was close to two hours the first night and down to 45 minutes the next. This forward progress is encouraging; her family is working on having her settle quickly. At other times Brandy happily lounges in her crate while her family is around. It’s closing the door for bedtime and being separated from her family that makes her unhappy.
Brandy is wonderful outside, staying close by to her family and hanging out with them while they do their farm chores. Although she was pretty scared when first meeting the horses and cow, she is getting used to them and doesn’t chase them. For this reason, Brandy can be trusted off leash in the pastures. Good girl!
Brandy is a happy, sweet girl that just wants to be with her family. She promises to be a devoted companion and is longing for her forever home.
