Update 06/21/11:
She is a typical, young ESS! This was certain after Brandy’s initial evaluation but just how young has been reassessed. Though an estimate as before, her foster family and vet feel she is not yet 2 years old, hence, a change in age! What girl doesn’t like to lose a year every so often!
Her family has also made progress with her when it comes to travel. If they withhold a meal before a car ride and feed upon returning home, Brandy’s tummy remains calm and she can ride in the car without incident.
This little cutie is ready for a family of her own, an active family that will enjoy working with her as she grows into full adulthood. She’s lived the life of a stray in the past and has no desire to do that ever again. Welcome her into your home and she will realize her dream!
Update 06/14/11:
Beautiful Miss Brandy checked out well when visiting her vet. Kennel cough is almost behind her now. Given some accidents in the house, she was tested for a suspected UTI, but the results were negative. With this finding, her vet feels Brandy is easily distracted when outside and is just too busy to completely empty her bladder. As she settles into the routine of home life, and, with some continuing house training, she should develop trustworthy habits. At 25 pounds, she is still actively growing but will be switching from puppy food to adult food at the vet’s recommendation. She’s a very active dog with no apparent health issues.
There is understandably a lot of puppy in this girl. At this point the only way she knows to get attention is by nipping at your hand. She needs to learn the appropriate way to get attention. She also needs leash training, another area that no one has likely helped her with before. Like other adolescent dogs, Brandy is into everything and wants to be part of everything. Her family has to watch her so she doesn’t chew on something she shouldn’t. Chew toys, which she likes a lot, are a must at this stage.
Brandy loves running and has amazing stamina. Having an active family and perhaps one that has raised an ESS puppy before would be perfect for her. She needs structure, positive reinforcement, love and a lot of exercise. Going to puppy school with her forever family would launch an enduring relationship quickly for her. Having a canine playmate in her adopting family would be great too.
When Brandy slows down, it’s easy to see she is very sweet. She loves back scratches and is a loving dog that just needs work. An adopting family should be poised for some intensive work with her for the next few months. For time and heart invested, they will be rewarded with a fine ESS for the rest of her life.
Original:
Brandy was found as a stray in West Virginia and was taken to an animal shelter. Since the shelter was very overcrowded, staff members then contacted MAESSR for assistance in finding her a wonderful new home.
Not yet housetrained, Brandy’s foster parents think that she may have a urinary tract infection since she will go outside to pee, but then comes back in the house only to urinate there. Her upcoming vet appointment will verify if she has a UTI and she will get the appropriate medication needed. She also seems to be battling with kennel cough. Despite these ailments, Brandy’s coat is beautiful and teeth look new. She is a typical, young ESS!
When her foster parents need to go out, Brandy is crated and she is also crated at night. She is very good about going into her crate and staying there quietly. Brandy may not have been an inside dog in the past because she does not seem to know what is expected of her inside the house. Her foster parents are working hard on teaching her about the proper ways of behaving inside. She craves attention but does not know a positive way to get it. She is very sweet, but the only way she tries to get attention is to be mouthy. Training is obviously in order.
Although Brandy has no problems with the two resident, senior ESSs and makes play overtures to them, they are not interested in frolicking with her – they just allow her to sleep near them which she enjoys doing. So, for fun, Brandy plays with squeaky toys, instead, and chews on rawhides. A high-energy fieldie, she gets her exercise playing and running in the yard. She plays hard, takes a nap, and then the cycle starts again! This is all very typical for a young Springer! She has not been leash walks, yet.
The only command that Brandy seems to know is sit, so her forever family will benefit greatly from taking her to obedience classes. This will help her become a more controlled, enjoyable pet. Right now, riding in the car upsets her stomach causing her to vomit, so food must be withheld before Brandy goes for a spin.
With training and care, someone will have a fine dog. Because of her boundless energy, Brandy should be placed in a home with older kids, not younger ones who could be accidentally knocked over. Her forever family must be very committed to getting her the exercise she needs. She would do well in having another young dog to help her burn off some of her energy! As they say, a happy Springer is a tired Springer!
Watch for updates on Brandy after she has been to the vet!
