When Brandy’s owner brought her to the shelter, he shoved her out of the truck. She tried to return to him and he kicked her to get her away from him. This poor girl has seen more than her share of abuse. She will be in foster care for a while as she learns that it is okay to trust people and that some humans can be good and kind to her.
When our first volunteer went to visit Brandy, she would not let him make eye contact or touch her. Yet, she walked nicely on the leash with him. When they went near his van, she was ready to jump in and go home. She still would not tolerate eye contact or touching, but she wanted to go home.
Brandy needs time. She needs to relax in her foster home and become adjusted to that situation. Her foster home will then start working with her to help her develop the sense of trust that must have been beaten out of her.
Brandy will never be a happy-go-lucky over the top Springer. However, we do think that with time and patience, she could be a loving and grateful companion in a quieter home with no young children. We don’t know how she is with kids but homes with kids are by definition not quiet. She will probably do best in a home that has a minimal amount of upheaval and a maximum amount of consistency. All we can do now is wait and see how her personality unfolds.
Keep this girl in your thoughts, she will need as much time, love and patience as her foster home can give her.
Update:
Brandy’s foster parents have adopted her. They have determined that she will likely never be trustworthy or able to make the adjustment to another home. She has simply had to much pain in her life. So, they are going to keep her. She is learning to trust them and is making progress.
