Updated 3/3/06: When Boston met his foster family, his greatest need was for socialization. He must have had a very limited start in life and almost everything around him was a new experience and frankly, scary. He found himself surrounded by a very patient, loving, foster family and a troop of resident Springers who were willing to teach him all they know. He is also benefiting in recent weeks from a temporary medication that the veterinarian recommended to help him along.
With everyone in his corner, this cutie is starting to come out of his shell. He has left the security of the couch and is now running, not just with the other dogs but often times, front and center! His beautiful, undocked white tail flows in the wind as he runs across the yard. A real sign of progress is that he bounds right up to his foster mom now when she comes home in the evenings. He is not a social butterfly yet but to see him begin to trust and enjoy life is priceless. Having a forever family to gently guide him into the next chapter of his life will be priceless too………
A correction from his original description – Boston is a bench bred type Springer.
Updated 1/16/06: Boston continues to be a sweetheart in his foster home and loves his new pet name, Boston Beanie. Why he so loves being called that is a mystery to his foster mom, but she likes seeing his reaction to it.
Boston remains a very tender youngster. He is a great dog but is scared of much that other dogs embrace in their day to day lives. He will come to his foster mom, at times when called, but then does an immediate retreat to the couch. Though “couch” time is usually taboo for fosters, for Boston, the couch has become his new security blanket. It’s a definite step forward from seclusion under the coffee table, so his family is making an exception to this house rule. He is really cute and will “wave” at his family from the couch. With an immense measure of patience and love, they look forward to the day when he feels secure enough to come begging for a treat!
In the meantime, Boston will go into his crate willingly and loves to run with the other dogs in his home. He is still rather shy when it comes to playing ball with the gang but that’s OK. His growing confidence in play is important and headed in the right direction. More on Boston as he grows into his new life.
Updated 12/6/05: Boston has been in his foster home for several weeks now and is starting to adjust to indoor life. There is just so much that is new to him. He is very timid and had been “hiding” under an end table. He’s now starting to venture out of his “safe” place to “mingle” with the family. As you can see by his latest photos, he waves, smiles, and loves the couch. Though totally endearing, his foster parents are working to correct that couch habit. He has also learned that his crate is a safe haven, and he uses it willingly.
There are several other dogs in his foster home, and Boston loves them all with the exception of the super excitable Springer, Millie. She is just too hyper for him. He is a laid-back dog who loves to be petted. He lets his foster mom touch his feet, rub his belly, and play with his ears. He likes to “shake” and has been great around the adults he is meeting. He travels well with his family, and with regular practice, he is learning to walk with more confidence on a leash.
Boston is a great dog, and with continuing love and attention, will be quite a personable family member in his new home. If you have a little extra couch space, Boston would love to share it with you!!
Original: Boston is a very handsome field bred Springer. He came to MAESSR because a breeder had failed to sell Boston and his two brothers. The breeder was expecting another litter and needed to move these youngsters along. The breeder advertised them locally and a rescue group in western Maryland responded. That group cared for the three boys for several days until MAESSR fostering could be arranged.
Boston is learning to walk on a leash and will begin picking up the basic commands that every pup wants to know. He was totally without socialization prior to coming into foster care and will have lots of new experiences in the coming months. His foster family is working with him to teach him how to enjoy being an indoor dog and an important part of a family. More updates will follow as Boston progresses.
