Update 06/02/08:
Boots is doing very well physically since his de-worming and has gained a few pounds now that he has begun to feel better. He will be de-wormed once more in the coming week to be sure he is free of parasites.
His personality continues to blossom along with his health. Boots is wonderful with strangers although he is a little wary of them when first introduced. He is protective of his family and will alert when strangers are near but warms up to them once they are welcomed into the home. He gets along with people and dogs he meets while on the leash or on his walks but has become jealous of his foster brother whenever the foster dad is around. He has bonded deeply with his foster dad and does not like sharing his affection with the resident dogs. Boots has become aggressive to his foster brother several times without warning and should be the only dog in his forever home to avoid this type of situation.
Boots loves the attention he gets from people and has been exposed to large crowds with success. He has perfect house manners and does not seem inclined to destroy or chew anything. He will counter surf if he knows there is food up there and follows his foster mom whenever she is cooking. He would prefer to eat only people food but does eat his dry dog food with no problems. He does not beg for food during dinner but will lie quietly under the table in the hopes of grabbing anything that drops from above. Boots is crate-trained and goes in when directed without any fuss. His foster family is having him sleep in his crate downstairs and he goes right to sleep with no barking or crying.
As of yet Boots doesn’t play with toys very much and prefers to lay on his foster dad or mom’s lap in the recliner, receiving as much loving as they can give him! He will be ready soon to meet and shower a new family with his full devotion and loyalty. Got space in your recliner to share with this gorgeous boy?
Original:
Boots was surrendered to a shelter by his owner when she was moving and was unable to take him with her to her new location. Boots had not been to the vet since he was neutered so he had all his vaccinations again.
Boots spent a week in the shelter and did fine while there. However, when he came to his foster home, it became apparent immediately that he was not well. He had no control of his bowels and was experiencing profound diarrhea. He was taken to the vet immediately and had blood work done which showed that he was indeed very sick. It was determined that he had an overwhelming parasitic infection which was causing him such discomfort that he was unable to eat. This poor boy weighed only 35 pounds and would not eat anything at all. The vet treated him for the parasites and Boots has slowly begun to come around. He is now eating as much food as he is given and is improving each day. However, he has also developed a kennel cough and is being treated for that as well. He will need to be de-wormed once again in two weeks.
Boots is beginning to become more active and has shown that he has wonderful house manners. He knows when to go out and has not had any more accidents since the diarrhea has abated. He has shown himself to be very protective of his foster family. When strangers come into the house, he will emit a very low warning growl but once he is introduced to them, Boots quickly warms up and nuzzles up to anyone who will pet him! He loves to lie in his foster dad’s lap at night while he is watching TV and especially loves to lie in the leather recliner when no one is around! He does not need to be crated at all but quickly goes into the crate at dinnertime as that is where he is fed. He does not beg, per say, but will sit and stare at anyone eating food and will come and investigate while mom is cooking dinner to see if any morsels happen to fall to the floor! He lies under the table while his family is eating but follows the dishes to the dishwasher just in case there may be some leftovers for him! Such a considerate helper!
Boots has shown no aggression to the resident dogs. Since he is still recovering his strength from his illness, he has not been taken out for any walks yet. He does love to sit outside on the deck in the sun. He has not yet shown the interest in playing with toys but hopefully that will come when his physical condition improves. He currently sleeps in the foster mom and dad’s bedroom along with his foster brothers and does love to get into bed with them for some tender loving before going to sleep. He is a real sweetheart who needs someone to love him as much as he loves them.
Watch for updates as Boots regains his health.
