Update 02/23/09: Boomer 2 is doing great! He’s a talker and will carry a conversation with his foster parents. He recently had his stitches from neutering removed and the e-collar came off…YEAH!!! So, off to the groomer he went. He loved it! The bath, the brushing and drying and cutting of his coat; he could have stayed there all day. After all the fussing by the groomer, Boomer looks so handsome! He prances around showing off like he’s ready to attend the Oscars.
Boomer has learned what door to use to go out and he will whine or lightly bark to go outside. He is much better with the resident dogs with more time to get acquainted. He has become great pals with the Chihuahua who is also black and white. It’s thought she now wants to be a Springer when she grows up!
This gorgeous boy is looking for a family to make his own right now and, if you happen to have a resident Chihuahua, you’ll have the inside track with Boomer.
Original: Big, beautiful Boomer was allowed to run free in his Pennsylvania home which was getting him into trouble with the neighbors. His owner did not have the time to train him to stay home, so he decided to relinquish Boomer to MAESSR.
Boomer has adapted well to his foster parents and wants to be close to them or at least have them in site. Completely housebroken, Boomer has not had any accidents at all since he’s been in foster care. He is crate trained and will go into his crate at night to sleep with only a little whining. In the kitchen, if he sees something that he wants, Boomer will counter surf. He also likes to put his paws on the counter to see what’s going on when a meal is being prepared. Boomer’s foster parents are working with him on this behavior. He tried to open the kitchen trash container only once and was caught. After a firm, “No”, there haven’t been any repeat incidents. A covered trash can is recommended for Boomer’s forever home.
Boomer was recently neutered and is wearing an Elizabethan collar so his incision will heal properly. He has been a bit like a bull in the China Shop wearing it. The first night that he had the collar on he couldn’t fit into the crate door, so he was allowed to sleep in the family room which is gated. He decided he wanted to be in the bedroom with his foster parents, so he knocked down the gate and came in around midnight. Because of the resident cat staying in the bedroom, his foster mom got up and took Boomer outside in case he needed to relive himself. The weather was cold that night and he cracked his Elizabethan collar when he came back into the house! His foster mom duct taped the E-collar back together and then slept on the couch with Boomer peacefully on the floor next to her! The next night he was gated in the laundry room and whined until his foster mom got up and sang to him until he settled down and went to sleep. Boomer is quite the character and enjoys the attention he is getting from his people!
When visitors come, Boomer meets them politely. He does try to jump on them but stays down with a firm “no”. He has not been around any children, but because of his size, youthful exuberance, and tendency to plow through when passing someone, Boomer could easily knock a child down. It might be best that his forever home has children old enough not to be bowled over.
Boomer knows the commands sit and stay but will not hold them long. Also, he will move out of the way when told, “Beep, beep.” When taken on a walk, Boomer is easily distracted and pulls on his leash, so his foster parents are working on keeping him focused on them. It takes a strong person to hang on to him or they will be ground surfing for sure! Additional obedience training is a must for this sweet big boy! Boomer loves to go for rides, but he likes to be up front to show that he too can drive; so, it is recommended that he should ride in a crate.
Boomer is generally sociable with other dogs, but he tends to snap at the two resident dachshunds and Chihuahua when they try to jump on their parent’s lap. The foster parents are working with him on that issue and now that he has been altered, they are hoping for better results once the testosterone levels decrease. The resident Maine Coon cat is currently living in the bedroom and wants nothing to do with Boomer. The feeling is mutual since Boomer hasn’t shown any interest in the cat. So, he would probably be fine with cats in his forever home. Boomer loves to play ball and gives the ball back nicely so you can throw it again. He has a soft mouth so treats and toys can be taken from him easily if needed.
Boomer loves to be hugged and kissed and will stick closed to you as long as nothing distracts him. After all he’s still a puppy in his foster parent’s eyes – a big puppy.
