Update 06/14/10:
Bonnie is an adorable little pup and is doing great in her foster home. She has such a great personality and is a lot of fun to have around. Every once in awhile, one of the other dogs catches her off guard with a playful pounce and she lets out a cry. Once she realizes it is all in fun, she happily joins in for a game of chase. She is improving on her fetch playing also. Now she picks up the ball when she gets to it and will sometimes carry it all the way back to whoever threw it.
Her house training has improved substantially. Bonnie still has the occasional accident, but that’s not bad for her second week in the new digs. She is starting to really appreciate her crate too. At the end of a long day, Bonnie heads right to her kennel and waits for her foster mom to arrive with a treat. She has formed a positive association with the crate since she gets a snack for kenneling up when her foster mom runs errands or when it is bedtime. She also eats her meals there to avoid the thievery of the resident dog. She has not had an accident in her crate since her first week in foster care. Learning respect for her own space has gone a long way with her housetraining overall.
Bonnie went for a walk the other day and her foster mom overestimated the distance this little girl could cover after a long day of roughhousing with the other dogs. Bonnie decided to lay down for a nap on a shady piece of grass and no amount of encouragement or treats could get her to begin walking again, so her foster mom scooped her up and carried her home. Even though Bonnie could not hoof it home herself, she did muster up the energy to shower her foster mom with puppy kisses the whole way. What a cutie!!
Bonnie is coming out of her shell more and more and her personality is beginning to shine through. She is looking for a forever family that will be gentle and loving as she continues on her path to becoming a sweet, energetic, and fun-loving Springer adult. Through both an obedience class with her adopting family and informal learning at home, the future for Bonnie is unlimited. Don’t miss out on being a part of it all!
Original:
Meet Bonnie! She and her littermates Scotty, Malcolm II, and Tessie II came into MAESSR’s care through a shelter in Tennessee.
This adorable puppy is a little reserved at first when she meets new people, but quickly warms up once she realizes that you are friendly. She is just getting used to receiving attention from people, so she still ducks her head and tries to move away when a stranger reaches to pet her. She became comfortable with those in her foster family after just a few short days of living with them.
A typical Springer puppy, Bonnie loves to play with toys and chew. She has not chewed anything inappropriate while in her foster home, though. If a ball is thrown for her, Bonnie will chase it, but she doesn’t really have the game of fetch down yet. Bonnie prefers to run to the ball and then wait for her foster mom to come and throw it again!
Bonnie’s leash skills were a little rough at the start, but with a little encouragement (and some kibble!), she was walking through the neighborhood like a champ. Bonnie still gets a little nervous when she hears anything unusual like a lawnmower, a car, or a dog barking in a house), so she needs the occasional pep talk to keep her going.
Housetraining is a work in progress. She has had an occasional accident in the house, but frequent potty breaks and lots of praise will help keep Bonnie on the right track with this. Bonnie is also getting used to sleeping in a crate. During the first few nights in her foster home, Bonnie voiced her opinion about being in “lock-up” before she settled in for the night. More recently, she entered her crate, ate her treat and went to sleep without a peep.
Good with the other dogs in her foster home and loves playing with them. She is submissive to the resident Springer’s dominance. With the resident, dog-savvy cats, Bonnie has shown only mild interest; she does some sniffing but no chasing when the cats decide to move on.
Bonnie is looking for a family that will give her the love and attention she needs to gain more confidence with people. This girl has a great spirit that she would love to show off! Could her forever home be with you?
