Bogey has been a world traveler during his short life, most recently returning from Africa to the District of Columbia. When his family’s latest transfer orders arrived, they did not take Bogey into consideration. The family was being sent to a place where it would not be safe for this handsome fieldie, so turning to MAESSR for help became imperative.
Bogey’s needs are simple. He would like to have a home where he can chase squirrels and perhaps a bird or two. Despite being a world traveler, Bogey does get car sick on occasion, but otherwise rides well. He walks nicely on a leash, unless a squirrel should happen to catch his attention. His latest discovery is the neighborhood deer. He’s not sure what they are but thinks they should be followed closely. He has never been swimming, but reportedly likes to wade in water and catch the waves at the beach.
Indoors Bogey loves his bones and squeaky toys. He is a well-behaved Springer, has been to obedience school and knows the basics of “here” “sit”, “stay”and “down”. Bogey has been completely housetrained and does his business in a timely way, either on leash or in the fenced backyard. He’s been taught that once his food bowl has been set down, he needs to sit and wait until someone says “Okay!” He is crate-trained and sleeps quietly there unless folks are having a good time in another room, in which case he’ll bark a bit to let you know he wants to be part of the fun. In his foster home, he sleeps on a dog bed in the breakfast nook.
Bogey’s original family included a toddler and a new infant. He reportedly did well with the toddler unless the little one decided Bogey needed to share his food or have his tail pulled. As with all dogs and little people, a watchful eye was needed. Bogie does counter-surf on occasion and reportedly liked to steal a pacifier to chew on in his original home. He has chewed nothing other than bones in his foster home – good boy! Bogey has never been around cats but does well with other dogs. When his foster folks are away, he and the resident springer are gated out of the kitchen but, otherwise, have free roam of the house with no problems.
Bogey displays medium energy in the house and is willing to kick back unless he can get someone to play or a squirrel appears on the bird feeder. He generally stays off furniture unless invited but will prop his chest and front feet up on the window seat to watch for critters. Outside he likes playing chase or exploring the yard; he also runs on leash with his foster mom. He shows no aggression at all towards humans and only measured response to the resident dogs testing him over territory or toys. He’s happy hanging out on the floor near the humans during breakfast or the workday.
All in all, Bogey seems to be the smartest and best-behaved foster dog his foster folks have had. Occasionally he’ll move nearby and do a sit-stay for 3 minutes as if he’s trying to tell you it’s time for something. Then with a sigh, he’ll go over and flop on his bed. Additional obedience training or possibly agility would be good fun for this curious boy who seems to love to “do” things. Handsome and a cuddle-bunny as well, Bogey will make someone a fine springer.
