Original: Bobo was dropped at a Maryland shelter by owners who left no information about his background. He has a rough patch on one back paw, so he may have spent a lot of time on a hard surface. An older woman applied to adopt him, but the shelter staff felt he was too active for an elderly owner. From there he came into MAESSR care. Bobo checked out well when he was vetted with only a follow-up on possible parasites to complete.
Typical of his age, Bobo is an active springer pup. With a daily routine and in knowledgeable hands, he has calmed down quite a bit in the 10 days with his foster home. He gets along well with his 5-year-old ESS foster sister and 2-year-old ESS foster brother. He wants to play more often than they do and they have had to tell him “No More!” He sometimes needs a few reminders before getting their message, but he’s learning. He loves to walk around with a tennis ball in his mouth and tries to chew the covers off. He was way too interested when meeting the family guinea pig, so the basement where that pet lives is now off limits to him.
Bobo is just now beginning to learn commands. His foster family is teaching him to “sit” and “come.” He will come for clapping hands but not if one says the word “come” just yet. He walks well on his leash but sometimes likes to travel in circles. He may pull if he sees a bird or a bug. It’s so easy for a pup to get distracted!!
Given his age and energy, it’s not surprising that Bobo needs some guidance on his house manners. He has great jumping ability and uses it to get to places without invitation. He has used an end table to get to the couch. He has topped his crate to reach his food bowl. When he tops something he shouldn’t, he gets a gentle prodding to get down and is showing progress. He has started to keep his back paws on the floor and now puts his front paws and head into a lap!
Bobo is great in a crate and sleeps quietly until he sees his foster mom or dad. He has attached mostly to the adults in his foster family although he gets along well with the human kids, ages 10, 15 and 18. He is mostly housebroken but as of yet does not really give clues about when he needs to go out. He doesn’t like to go outside alone and will jump up on the door to get back in. And while outside with people, he stays very close and does not wander far. He’s bolder once in the car and likes to help drive, so for safety sake, Bobo needs to ride in a harness or crate.
Bobo is a little diamond in the rough. He has all the potential to be a loving, active, and lifelong companion for the person or family who will give him the time and training he needs now to finish what his foster family has started. An obedience class will be a must. It can provide a great way for Bobo to channel a lot of his youthful energy and for his family to bond with their newest addition. And don’t forget the puppy kisses that complete the experience!!
