Before MAESSR rescued this adorable young boy, he was relinquished to an Ohio shelter due to the financial difficulties of his family who had acquired him as a puppy. His family obviously cared for him very much and should be proud of the nice young fellow they raised him to be. Bobby has a very pleasant personality and gets along well with the two resident dogs, a male Springer and female Beardie mix. He was a big hit at the vet’s office where his adoring fans loved the little Mohawk effect he had going on at the time. The unfamiliar surroundings made him a little anxious, but he was a good boy during his exam. He especially enjoyed the treats which followed! Weighing in at 52 pounds, Bobby got a clean bill of health with the exception of worms, for which he is undergoing treatment.
Bobby has been a most pleasant guest in his foster home. Initially he was slightly anxious, but that was easily resolved by removing the safety gate which separated him from the other dogs and, at times, his foster mom. With the barrier gone, he settled in quickly. Bobby is a smart boy and eager to please his foster mom. He is responsive to the commands “sit,” “down,” “come,” and sometimes “lay down”; he has good recall, as well. When excited, Bobby has a tendency to jump up on people, but he has not bothered any of foster mom’s possessions or the trash. On the other hand, he can be a counter-surfer and is usually on the lookout for something tasty. On one successful raid, he scarfed up two frozen pieces of Texas toast when his foster mom left them unguarded in the kitchen for just a moment. He was so quick that he didn’t even get garlic breath! This boy has a healthy appetite and quickly consumes his supper. His foster mom has resolved this by placing his food in a bowl designed to slow him down. He gently accepts treats and quickly learned that sitting is required. Bobby will sit and watch his foster mom eat, occasionally grunting to request that she share!
Bobby is housetrained, having had just one accident minutes after his arrival at his foster home. This was probably due to nerves, as he has had none since. Additionally, there has been no marking or submissive urination. Normally Bobby is let out on a schedule, but he will stand at the door or give a little scratch if he needs to go to the bathroom. Atta boy, Bobby! He quickly takes care of personal matters and is ready to go back inside, especially when the weather is cold and windy.
When his foster mom is at work, Bobby has been crated. He will bark when she leaves, but the house is quiet upon her return at lunchtime and after work. He goes in his crate with the promise of a treat and is a good boy in there. Bobby has been crated for up to five hours at a time and he doesn’t appear to suffer separation anxiety. Woo hoo! His foster mom suspects that he would be fine out of the crate while she’s gone, but she isn’t comfortable doing so quite yet as the resident Springer, who thinks he’s king of the castle, can be a little grumbly at times.
In his foster home, Bobby has been a moderate energy boy. A typical Velcro Springer, he wants to be close to his human and occasionally will give kisses. He doesn’t seem highly needy and is often content to lie close by on the floor. The first few nights in his foster home Bobby insisted on sleeping in his foster mom’s bed, but he now sleeps on the dog pillow in the bedroom. (Fair warning: if Bobby is allowed to sleep in a family bed, one may wake up to find him stretched across you!) When downstairs, he would prefer to lounge on the couch instead of a dog pillow, but he gets down with prompting.
Much of the time Bobby has a smile on his face and a wiggly behind as he is a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. He enjoys cuddling, long walks, a good roll on the bed or carpeting, soaking up the heat in front of the gas fireplace, gnawing on synthetic bones, as well as chasing and ripping up his foster brother’s prized tennis balls. (Please, just the old muddy ones!) On the leash Bobby has a tendency to pull, but he is doing quite well on a Gentle Leader. He quickly learned to walk in the middle of his two foster siblings and does so most of the time. He has not reacted to any environmental stimuli on walks, including ducks at the pond. Car rides are fun for Bobby and he is well-behaved in the car; sitting shotgun is preferred, but not mandatory. His foster mom has not noted any fears as yet, although Bobby is not keen on having his mouth handled. In fact, his worm medication was put on his food as his foster mom could not get his mouth open far enough to get in the syringe. Maybe the second dose will go better! Within hours of his arrival, Bobby was bathed and he was a good boy in the tub. Although he tried to jump out initially, he was cooperative throughout his bath. He has been brushed a couple of times, and although he enjoyed the attention, he was not really into it.
Bobby’s foster mom feels some family is going to be very lucky to welcome him into their home. The best family situation for him would be one with older children or just adults. It was reported that he will chase small children, but perhaps he found this to be a game since no nipping was involved. A canine friend or two would be a plus! There wasn’t much history provided on Bobby’s first five years, but his foster mom has found him to be a really nice fellow who is loving, smart, playful, and a good listener. Sounds like a real special guy!
